Just simple chat and questions. Hope you are viewing Floyd.
Are they worth a stab for fun and games? I hear they are very problematic for cycle? I have lots of 9mm ammo and have the itch to install one in my Sarco folder. I am aware of furniture clearance problems. I'm more concerned with the overall function of these. Has anyone ventured testing these 9mm carbines? Price is low and that is always a concern. Thanks to all watching with input. Best wishes for the upcoming holiday season. |

I don’t own one but have probably seen much of the press, good and bad. If you are just looking for a 9mm carbine that resembles the original and won’t be shot a lot….it might fill that bill, but I don’t think a single thing on it or in it is interchangeable with the USGI design.
I wanted a gas operated 9mm version built as close as possible to being completely parts interchangeable. The M1-9 doesn’t come anywhere close to doing that. I don’t personally bash and never owned or fired one. The blow-back design just did not fit into what my objective was. |

There are plenty of 9mm carbines out there that perform wonderfully, all that I know of are blow-back actions. The blow-back action requires a much heavier reciprocating mass to keep the bolt closed long enough to allow safe opening. The beauty of the M1 carbine action is that it is gas operated and operates under the principal of a locked breech. It doesn’t require the extra mass necessary in a blow-back action, thus reducing the overall weight of the weapon. Pick up a Camp Carbine and compare the feel vs. an M1 carbine. Pick up a High Point 1911 clone vs. a spec 1911 and notice the weight. The High Point is a blow-back and better serves as a boat-anchor in comparison to the spec locked breech 1911.
The complicated part of all this might be trying to make something work that looks like the M1 carbine….which was never designed to work that way.🤔 The 22lr version of this is completely practical, but the 9mm is a stretch to keep everything balanced, durable and safe.

There really is no reason why some manufacturer couldn’t produce a 9mm M1 carbine to USGI specs. The few of us that can do it have and it’s not all that difficult. It’s been done before and much earlier than we might think. There is a Winchester example in a museum. I like the 30-carbine just fine, but shooting 9mm at around 25-cents a round is a lot less expensive and just as much fun. Reloaders can have a field day with the 9mm in a carbine chassis. The action can handle about any load you can build.

Thanks guys. I recently did a Chiappa M1-22 and it is posted in the Commercial Carbine section as well.
Chiappa M1-22 - Cadmus folder swap I used a nice high wood Cadmus folder. It was a fun project and functions well. No problems with feed and the blowback design, and I get what Floyd is saying with the heavy bolt and spring for the 9mm to function. Reviews are not real good on these. I was just toying with the idea on the M1-9 in my Sarco folder. Much cheaper to just enjoy with ammo. After more study on disassembly. The mass of all the slide and bolt function areas is huge and ugly for starters. Slide functions on both sides and would be a mess and possibly destructive to my Sarco folder stock if the attempt proved fatal for the furniture. It's just not worth it. I think I will find play projects in another direction. Thanks again guys. |

Wise decision I would say. You already said it….there might be a good reason they are so cheap?
