I searched through the SN spreadsheet and cannot find this early of a barrel. I've scoured the net and cannot find any info on barrel production dates by month/year.
Is this a rare barrel? ![]() |

It is early, not the earliest! Is it attached to a receiver?

It is attached to an Underwood from 3/44.
When did Underwood start producing barrels? They didn't start producing guns until 12/42 right?

Do not confuse deliveries with production. Underwood was looking to get into wartime production. they received a purchase order March 25 1942 and a formal contract on June 26, 1942 earliest know barrel dates can be found in a thread about the last barrel produced. There is a ton of information on these forums. There are two search functions. At the top of the page, below the banner on the right side is the built in forum search function. It has an advanced feature to narrow down the person that wrote something, or you can search a specific forum section Just below that section there are 3 google search bars. the one on the left searched the US carbine web pages as well as the forum. Incidentally, you can get to the web pages by clicking the banner. The only issue with the google search is it cannot index posts that are in sections that you can only access when you are logged in, so the forum search function is your friend.

Thanks, I checked out that post. I see that a gentleman there stated a 9/42 barrel was one of the first from Underwood.
Is there any place to find barrel production data? An early barrel would add to the value right?

My Underwood Carbine sr #1,350,069 also has a 10/42 barrel and was in the first delivery to the Gov't from Underwood, 12/42, (as far as I know). ''War Baby'' is a good reference, you can spend a lot of time with that book. My Underwood is a well worn Korean buy-back from the 1990's and so marked. Who knows how many times it was rebuilt.

Congratulations on having one of the earliest Underwood carbines, However your receiver was made by Inland! The club published documentation from Underwood back in May 1998, Newsletter 259 page 3 Underwood replying to a directive listed 200 receivers that Inland sent to Underwood to assist in the start of production. It gave the original Inland serial number and the Underwood serial numbers place on them from 1350101 to 1350200. They then state they received an additional 110 receivers from Inland that were not marked with serial numbers. 91 pieces were marked wit the serial numbers 1350010 to 1350100 So you carbine was assembled after the first 200, which probably accounts for the barrel date. That also would put into the second month of deliveries, Dec 1942. Nov 1942 only 100 were delivered. Please post some pictures of the receiver, Left, right, bottom, Name/serial as well as front ring markings. So as cool as it is to have a 9-42 Underwood barrel, the OP would need to find a receiver that was very early.

There are photos of my carbine here already. I'll find them and post the link. Last year I did somewhat of a deeper study on my Underwood and found probably quite a few of the parts that made it up were probably not of Underwood origin, most likely being of Inland mfg. Today at our monthly meeting of Central Pennsylvania Antique Arms Assn. I picked up a late National Postal Meter sr. # 4,255,255, (yes, that's the actual sr. # and part of the reason I bought it). More after a tear-down and photos.
