New member from Central PA area.  I've had an interest in M-1 Carbines since I bought my first while in high school.  Since then a few have come and gone, each one an Inland as I recall.  I had been without one for some years until a guy at work ask if I wanted to buy one, ''Sure, long as it's G.I. and not some commercial wreck.''   He brings in an Underwood with a 10-42 barrel stamp and serial number of 1350069 which puts it in the first shipment from Underwood, December 1942, I believe.

Of course it's been rebuilt several times over, the receiver and barrel being the only still matched parts from 1942, but it's still a keeper.

Krag, pics please Smile
what you have is one of the earliest Underwood's, that were actually Inland receivers that were sent to Underwood.

I'm not surprised, though have not read anything indicating Inland receivers used in early Underwood production.  I do know Underwood used some major and minor parts from Inland, Rock-Ola, and Winchester in their early production carbines in the ''integration'' program.

I'll get photos of the receiver and barrel up, hopefully today.  Since this seems to be an interesting subject of study, I'll start a new thread in, ''U.S. Carbines of WWII''

In May 1998 the clubs newsletter published Underwood's "Plant Correspondence" dated November 17, 1942, in response to a directive, laying out how 210 receivers from Inland and how 100 serialized Inland receivers were renumbered and with what new serial number. That 100 did not have a serial number and the range they were numbered by Underwood. This is where your serial is from.
The other 10 receivers were sent to another concern.

What you should find on your receiver is the rear of the slide slot should be rounded

The earliest Underwood made receivers have a square cut

see datasheet if you do not understand the feature

Your receiver is really rare! The Newsletter Dan referenced above mentions that, at that time, only one other had been reported. I don't know if any more have been reported since. Maybe Dan can find out. Can't wait to see the pictures.

By the way, welcome to the Club from New Mexico!

Thanks for the welcome, Jack!

I'm having an awful time figuring out how to post pictures!  I took it outside, stripped it down and took twenty-some photos.  I can say this, markings on the front receiver ring are standard, no flaming bomb on the heal, ''Underwood'' behind the sight dovetail with sr.# 1350069 stamped under it, (looks normal) same sr.# in front of the dovetail as for having a type 3 stamped rear sight, a single punch mark below the hand stamped number, and the only other mark on it is a 3 stamped on the bottom of the trigger group pillar where the pin goes through.  The rear of the slide slot is rounded.  No other marking on or in the receiver.

Barrel marking are, flaming bomb, Underwood, 10-42.

Now, I need some help with posting photos.  I read the instructions, didn't pan out.  I use Imgur, but have the photos on computer also.

I kinda thought I had something when I saw the barrel date and Underwood.  I had to check WB to find it was Underwood's sr. # 69 though.  It's nice to get ''The rest of the story'' here!

And much of what I learned war from other club members that have been sharing information since 1976, And I am still learning!
Submissions and posts have also been very useful in learning even more.

And in turn we share it with everyone here, and hopefully it continues so the next generation of carbine enthusiasts to do the same

I did manage one somewhat clear barrel pic, flaming bomb-Underwood-10-42 I believe are the only markings and they're worn somewhat thin now as is the finish above the wood.  I imagine it was someone's constant companion 1943-44-45 rebuilt and saw action in Korea, maybe as an M-2 even.

Front receiver ring?  U.S CARBINE over CAL .30 M1 centered.
