Hello everybody. I was recently gifted this M1A1. The guy that gave it to me said his grandfather had it in WW2 in Japan. I don't have a personal connection to it and I'm not a collector but I've had some difficulty in getting anybody to validate the authenticity of this gun. I believe from everything I've found that it's legitimate but I've been told that the type 3 barrel band means its a put together and because it doesn't have the circle p it's not worth anything. If this is the case then I'll accept it and give the rifle to my friend that was airborne but I have no reason to doubt the story of the guy that gave it to me and haven't found anything on this rifle that makes me think it's fake. Thanks in advance for any advice. Trying to get some other pictures to load but it keeps saying something about the security after I resized them. I'll work on it some more later. The barrel is also stamped 11-44. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by New2brass - Mar 17 2026 at 1:00pm |

![]() As far as the stock goes, I think it looks good. Look on the bottom of the grip for RI 3 marking. Some second run stocks were not circle P marked. I think the handgrip should have a .50 cross cannon cartouche. A picture of the back side of the cheek pad would help. If the grip has an SA on it, it is post war.

Here's some other pictures. Pretty sure the bayonet is a reproduction. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by New2brass - Mar 17 2026 at 1:00pm |

type 3 band does not mean put together. the type 3 band/bayo lug showed up in the 6.2 million range for Inland Is the band marked KI, AI or something else? The question is if your serial range is consistent with M1a1 stocks what marking is on your bayo that makes you think reproduction? Was it easier to upload pics this second time? A FYI, when adding pics and text, hit enter twice in between them. This separates the text and pictures so the text does not wrap around the pictures |

Look on the bottom of the handgrip for any markings. Possibly fold your stock a little for a clearer view of the markings. That should have a RI 3 stamp. It is just my opinion but I would most definitely hang on to this weapon. You'll never get a better buy!!!!

How would I go about verifying whether the serial range is consistent with M1a1 stocks? I forget exactly what the markings on the bayonet are. I'll look at it when I get home but from what I saw it was typically a repro. The first time I tried to upload pics I tried to resize them using microsoft photos. This time I resized them when emailing them to myself and it was significantly easier. Thanks for the heads up about double enter.

That page is actually what got me to start thinking it was real and how I found the forum. Serial falls within Inland’s second block according to that.

Looks legit to me and similar to one of mine in that serial number range. Others may chime in, but if cobbled together someone one did a hell-of-a-good job.
