Hi again,

re: the Jacques Van Molle STD PRO Carbine with the Underwood 10-49 barrel, I found the first letter that Jacques mailed me in Aug 1987, when I was arranging a visit with him. He had done quite a bit of homework researching his carbine's origin.

He mentions the 4640 number on the sling and carrying case, but no letter preceding the number. Just 4640.

He mentions the IS marking on the oiler, the recoil plate marked STANDARD PRODUCTS, and the 10-49 on the barrel.

He then writes "I found this carbine with a lot of magazines and ammunition in April 1945 on the battlefield of the 'Battle of the Bulge' in a wood where, from Dec 19, 1944 till December 26,

1. the 589th Field Artillery Battalion of the Major Arthur C. Parker
2. the 203rd AAA Battalion
3. the 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron
4. the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment commanded by the Captain Junior R. Woodruff
5. the 82nd Airborne Division"

That's all I can add to the story of that carbine. I'll mail the photos to Dan P and perhaps he can spot something that I've missed.

Regards, mb

thanks for the update Marty, I know some people can take that picture of his carrying case strap, enlarge it, and place different filters on it making different things stand out. I don't know if it would help in this situation but on another forum it certainly did recently. I believe they posted a rather dirty  M1878 haversack that had insignia on the flap which could not be read until one of the filters was placed on it from another member. Then it could be read 1st regiment, company H,  GA U.S.V. . Thank goodness that carbine had a carrying case since he found it in April .That would have been 4 months after the battle which I'm sure kept a lot of the weather off of that carbine until Jacques found it.
