Hi and welcome to the Club from New Mexico.

I've never seen the bolt tool described in this patent "reduced to practice" (a patent term). It was patented in 1949, well after the development and production of the "Tool, Bolt, Carbine, T5" in 1944 by Springfield Armory that is recognized as the official Second Echelon tool for bolt assembly and disassembly (Ref. CCNL 118-1). By 1949 such an elegant design perhaps would have been unnecessary since the carbine was no longer in production and the Springfield Armory tool was already available.

The Club did post an article about Corporal Pecca, the individual that perhaps inspired the development of the T5 bolt tool.

That is very interesting, however the design may not have been used by ordnance.
April 1944 a Corporal Pecca designed a bolt tool.

This design was modified as the T5 and became the common  bolt tool that was used by our military
The U.S. Caliber .30 Carbines - Parts

There was a presumably earlier tool that was the T4e1

The operation of this seems similar, but the one in the patent looks to be a hand held pliers type of tool.

If possible can you email or post some larger pictures of the newspaper article and the date published so I can dig a little deeper.

I believe that particular tool was the topic in the below linked thread, unfortunately the pictures are missing. Maybe carbinekid can repost the missing picture.

After hours of digging, I finally found the Hopkins patent on page 1705 in War Baby III. A similar bolt assembly tool (Pat. No. 2,474,848) appears on page 1706, invented by P. E. Kern also on July 5, 1949. Neither were believed to have been intended to replace the T5 bolt tool.

BE, Did you receive my email? I see someone posted larger pictures in another thread.
Absent information and dates i was able to find this clipping.

The Daily Times Davenport, Iowa  August 28, 1944

http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/uploads/3657/ToolBoltPliers.jpg

So this may help with a timeline.
Springfield Armory is now a museum and unlikely to have personal records.
Camp Pickett in VA is now Fort Barfoot. The fort was deactivated and reactivated several time. Possible records were moved around.

+1 Charlie. Wouldn't it be amazing if somewhere somehow one of these turned up? I would love to see an example of these pliers as well

Possible people could not figure what the tool was for.
If a set of blueprints show up I could probably make one! LOL

The question is time frame now, We know of the T4E1 and the adopter T5. Somewhere, if it still exists are mentions of the T1 through T3 and any experiments on those versions.

One item just popped into my head, there was an article on taking down the bolt with a crushed bullet casing.
I am running out the door, so if anyone is bored, flip through the "Newsworthy section" and post a link for the benefit of anyone down the road reading this post.

Thx for the link Wayne. In the Link it says: "The author has repeatedly done it in less than one minute.

Quite Impressive! But I'll stick with my Bolt tool and box of extra pawls.

Before I bought a bolt tool I did disassemble/assemble a few bolts with a shim. It was an exercise in frustration. Especially trying to find a the spring after it launches.
Someone in ordnance has the luxury of a pile of spare parts

Bolt tools are inexpensive. I still tell the new guy to practice doing it in a large ziplock bag.
