Saw this handbook on ebay the other day, never seen one so I made an offer, and the seller accepted. Curious to know if anyone else has ever come across one of these.

Wayne, I've tried finding other examples of this book online and I simply cannot find anything like that. I'm not the greatest researcher but you may have something that is quite rare from the Korean war or at the end of the Korean war. Can anybody else find other examples of this book out there anywhere?

It will be interesting to see what's in it, and maybe there will be some clues as to why Sampson leadership thought such a book was needed. At the begining of WW2 issue of carbines we see short booklets produced at some bases. One for the Tank Destroyer school (Camp Hood), another for the USMC. I've always assumed those were needed to fill the gap for additional specific training. Either full manuals were not available, or a condensed - combat focused manual was needed. For example the Tank Destroyer School included a short section on 'combat shooting' positions at the end. As discussed in some other threads, the USMC adapted 'familiarization' courses for their potential carbine users from 1943-45.

One would also think since the date being 1953, the book should be exclusively talking about the M2 / M3 carbine correct? Even though the picture on the front shows an M1 with a 15-round magazine., I'm not sure how many M1's were in their original configurations by 1953. Were all of them supposed to be converted by that time frame?

Off the top of my head, no. My impression was the plan was only to convert X number of existing M1 carbines to select fire configuration. If there had been a strong push to convert all I think we would have seen this included into the post-war overhaul programs.

From 1951 to 1956 Sampson AFB was one of 3 locations that the Air Force conducted Basic Military Training (BMT) aka (Boot Camp). This handout was given to entry level trainees (recruits who had no access to Big-Uns magazine) and is written to a scared kids level of comprehension. Very basic, it does mention the M1A1, M2 and M3 but basically just descriptions of each. One thing it does say that many still argue about today, Raw Linseed Only on the stock! Charlie, I assume that you are talking about the category it was listed under on ebay? I search M1 Carbine, or 30 carbine and it was there, the seller had it listed under books, textbooks, study guides & test prep.

Gotta be other versions / types out there for cadets, rotc etc. My Rifle club has been operating since 1917 and this last springs meeting I seen a display they had of pamphlets and small booklets they'd hand out to members that were dated in to the early 30's. Your new grab is a nice find for something we'd never think to look for. Of course now we're looking LOL. To add some of those trainees were old enough for 'Big Uns'. My Uncle was Drafted to Viet Nam from 6th grade.......  Ch-P777
