I have a late war inland, carbine barrel date is 11–44, serial number is 6,358### I’m wondering if a type two rear sight with an H in the shield would be correct?

A quick check in the Serial Number Spread Sheets for Inland carbines in that serial number range show both milled adjustable rear sights marked "PI" and stamped adjustable rear sights marked "I.R.CO.". I didn't see any sights marked "H" in a shield in that range.

The Carbine Collectors Club has published Newsletters in the past that identifies markings found on carbine parts in four serial number blocks. The first two blocks (CCNL 346 and CCNL 353) note only leaf type (flip) sights. The third block (CCNL 361) covers serial numbers 4,879,526 through 5,549,821 and notes both flip sights and both types of adjustable sights (milled and stamped). The Hemphill ("H" in a shield) is listed along with "H.I." (also Hemphill) as one of the earliest adjustable sights used. However, the fourth block (6,219,689-6,449,686) lists only "H.I.", "PI" and "I.R.CO.", no "H" in a shield (see CCNL 372). This is the block your carbine is in. This conclusion is supported by searching the Inland Serial Number Spread Sheet and finding no "H" in a shield on rear sights in any of the "Carbines of the Month" (COM) or "Carbines of the Collector's" for this serial number range.

The reason bringing this question to bear on the carbine is the rear sight seems to perfectly match the receiver as far as Petina and aging also, the stake marks seem unmolested, it looks, as though it ,was original to the gun, and I knew they interchange a lot of parts because of necessity during the war?
