Hi all, Thank you so much for such a great forum & group. My name is Stephen and I live in the Philadelphia suburbs, Like many (most?) of you, I have been transfixed by the M1 carbine since I was a youngster. I have long been a history student (and recently retired from College teaching in the subjects of social policy and history), with a particular focus on the New Deal to current US social welfare processes. Anyway, in my retirement I want to expand my knowledge & skills (I am shooting regularly for the first time in40 yrs!) with WWII weaponry, most especially the M1 carbine. I now have several from various manufacturers in different levels of original condition, as well as a couple interesting post wars too. I will provide some additional details as time goes by. I also have a pretty interesting collection of New Deal & WWII home front items (I know, different group!) but there is overlap. Anyway, that is enough about me. For now, "hello"to all & I look forward to conversing with folks. Best! Stephen

Welcome to the forum Stephen, looking forward to hearing/seeing more about your carbine collection. [QUOTE=StephenEKauffman] I also have a pretty interesting collection of New Deal & WWII home front items (I know, different group!) but there is overlap. We also have an "off topic" sub-section under General Discussion if you care to share any of your other interesting items.

Howdy almost neighbor! Or should I say Yo? :) Up until a few years ago I too hadn't done much serious shooting since I was teen. I shoot at the state range occassionally and usually make the monthly CMP matches at Kimberton. Nothing wrong with home front history. That's a big part of the carbine's story and frankly where most Americans were. In fact there's at least a couple threads about other items made by the carbine manufacturers, as well as about the plants and the people who worked at them. - Matt

welcome to the forum! We look forward to hearing about your collection and seeing some pictures if you can figure out how to post them. Some people have trouble (like myself) posting pictures but there are threads in the forum that explain how to do it. You are in the right place to learn about your carbines

Welcome to the forum. My father was a gliderman in the 17th during WWII. Hence my interest in US small arms.

Stephen, welcome to the party! Glad to hear that you increased your hobby time upon retirement. Upon my retirement 9 years ago my shooting and collecting hobby time really blossomed. Life is good. Please post often and stay engaged with the forum.

Hi Matt, Thanks again for the welcome. I was wondering re your post about shooting at the State range. Have they ever bothered you about using (if you do) a semi-automatic, like an M1 carbine? I'd like to go out there sometime but if I read the regs correctly it is not permitted - at least with more than a 3 round clip? LMK if you get a chance. Best! Steve

Steve, It's completely OK. The range rules are more open than the hunting rules. Just load 6 or less in the magazines. I generally load 5 for because that's what is done for rapid fire in the service rifle (and carbine) CMP match. For me the downside of the Warwick/French Creek range is the tables and benches make it awkward to practice prone. But its doable. Kimberton's range is nice and the match is open to the public. It does face south and slightly uphill so can be a little more challenging. - Matt
