Hey Everyone -

I just joined the Carbine Collector Club and WOWZA!.....what a wealth of information!  Although I have owned many modern guns, the M1 Carbine was never on my radar until recently when a friend told me she had one for sale.  After reading through the forum and the history of the M1, I really want to own one now.  My friend doesn't know the value and I want to make her a fair offer, so I would appreciate your opinions.  Reading through the forum, I understand that just about every part has a maker's mark, but I have only captured some external pics for reference.  The receiver is a Standard Products and the barrel is a Buffalo Arms dated 9-1943.  The stock has a very faint crossed cannons cartouche.

Also, I want to find an M1 that I can regularly shoot at the range.  Is there anything in particular I should look for to determine if the gun will be shooter and not just a wall hanger?

Thanks in advance -- Doug

Nice looking Carbine! I can't say what you should offer, but someone who is wiser than me will be along with advice

Welcome to the forum. Carbines are addictive. You’ll see that soon enough. I would only be able to guess at a value as well but I would put it in the $1200 range. The sling and oiler look promising and would add value potentially. Someone wiser will give a more accurate number though.

The handguard and rear sight are not original to the rifle and suggest a rebuild of some sort. If you could get a picture inside the slingwell, that would let us know if it is a Standard Products stock. Knowing the internals would be beneficial but that would require a breakdown.

If you haven’t read Standard Products history, it is worth the time. The history is what prompted me to actively seek out my first STD PRO carbine.

Good luck!

The CC so close to the Oiler slot is likely a OI or HI for Inland stock.
Sling value is hurt a bit by the MRT stamp.
If Chamber and Bore look good I'd agree to the $1200~ range to be fair to a friend. More or less depending on if any extras come with it.

Highwood stock many people prefer - so thats a plus on value for many.
Type I barrel band if original would also nudge the value up a little, especially for those into WW2 collecting. Some say the type II and III barrel bands help in accuracy, but IMO worry about that only once you've got consistant groups in the black (9 & 10s on the SR-1)
Flip safety is modification and adds to the impression it is very much a mix, and I would say a shooter unless you are takin gto some sort of event where it will get thrown in the mud or could break the stock.
It's my impression tha prices vary a bit depending on the region you live.

We have enough information to know it’s a rebuild, which is certainly not a bad thing at all. Has a couple of original parts maybe, just not in the category of a “collectable” carbine. If she shoots….shoot her and enjoy it. These little guns have outlived one human lifetime and maybe more. The casual shooter is not going to hurt it and you can pass it down to the next in line and it will still be shooting. Enjoy!

DogDoc - thanks for pointing me to the Std Products history - great story specific to the Battle of Bataan.

Painter777 - can you expand on the MRT stamp comment?  Is that an indication of a gun that saw action post-WW2?

MRT... Means the sling was Mildew Resistant Treated. Seems there was another version that slips my mind right now that basically did the same, But maybe the letters arranged differently, Like MFP (?) Fungal? But it's late here.
Mildew treatment: a Fungicide was applied to fabric and leather to prevent rot from wet conditions.
As far as I know just by the Military. Sometimes after treatment it was Stamped with a Date in Leather or a Metal Tab Or on Fabric it was Ink stamped. Again as far as I know it was a Post WWII Product, likely after seeing the detrimental effects of Jungle and harsh salt water conditions had on gear.

Some say that's what gives old Surplus Canvas that musty smell. But I don't know if that's true or not.
I can say I've never seen a MRT stamp dated during the WWII Period.

@zabadozer,
To add from a article from Mr. Bill Ricca:

Question: I have a leather sling marked MRT. Who is this manufacturer?

Answer: MRT is not a manufacturer's abbreviation. Mildew Resistant Treatment (MRT) is an anti rot treatment applied to some leather and web items. Most 1945 manufactured web items I've inspected over the years were evidently headed for the tropics. Most GI production during the last year of the war was marked "Fungus Proofed" or FP. The earliest MRT marking I have observed is 1947.

We have seen examples of MFP ink stamps, see link:

Charlie,  Is it a misunderstanding that web and canvas articles produced earlier, but in storage, got treated and marked MRT in the 50s?

Matt,
I thought it was the early 50's when MRT started showing up. But after seeing that Mr Ricca stating 45 production heading for the Tropics got the early version treatment: FP or MFP it must have started earlier.
Then him saying the earliest he'd witnessed a MRT mark was dated 1947.

Seems to run about the timeline of the rebuild programs or maybe the bulk of the treatments, then storage.
45 - 47 Being Earlier than I would have thought.
I'll pay closer attention from now on.
