In this section I am asking the membership to report any miss stamped, errors, or a font variation that may not have been reported. If in doubt, post it. A wise man once said "It is better to look at it, then to look for it" The first one is rather common. The M.S. Little company code was "L" and they made magazines for IBM, Inland, Standard products, and Underwood. It would seem whomever was stamping the magazine did not pay much attention as as there are many low stamping, I have even seen one off the bottom of the magazine ![]() There are a few reported size variations of the fonts, Some may be light vs heavy stamping where the die goes deeper. I am not concerned about these, but some have a more noticeable font size due to a different die. One reported and not seen is the UN with serifs being larger. The small font is common, but if you put them next to each other it may become more obvious. Here is one you probably saw but did not realize there were two font sizes ![]() Font spacing is also of interest. Some are closer, others farther apart. Now if you look at the above you will see the fonts are different shapes on both letters. Sometimes they are the same spacing but have different font shapes. ![]() sorry for the small picture, it is very old submission of poor quality. To me it looks like the one on the right the "Ss" does not curve at the ends. The 4 may be open top. If you are reporting, sharing , or posting please include the whole magazine and picture of the bottom plate. Keep your mags out, as there are more to follow later Happy Hunting! Seems this topic was inadvertently locked. Fixed now so if you tried posting, please try again. Has anyone had the time to check their SS_4 magazines for variations? Got lots more Remember, the point of the club is the exchange of information.

Lukes chart shows a side ways Serif SL with Type V bottom.
I just came across a Auction with poor pictures, but appears to be regular S with Serif top L With both letters, I believe being underlined: SL

Charlie, I reached out to the seller and he provided a better picture. It is serif'ed as we would expect.

Charlie, I am working on editing all pictures of mags that I have and will be posting. the SS-4 you post looks like all the pics I have except this one on the left. ![]() it looks like an open top 4 but that can be just poor quality, however the "SS" looks very different shape on the UN, supposedly there is a larger font UN sans serif. The QU next to the UN serif is one to look at, I think there are two different "Q"

I posted the SS-4 because it was different than the 2 in the Mag collection display.
And just stumbled across the U's and UN's while roaming.
If any of the pictures I posted are going to clash with your project feel free to delete. I needed a break from Conn Tool today am I being punished?Charlie-P777 |

Charlie, no problems at all. I appreciate any input or submissions at all. It is better to look at it then to look for it! I was just pointing out some things for guys to look for. It is somewhat a huge project for only a few people, so having everyone looking would certainly be helpful.

That double stamping indicates the manufacturing sequence was something in the order stamp ID and ribs, cut (maybe also a punch press?), bend, fold and make the lockseam.

Few things first, different manufacturers may have done in different orders. second, I suspect some companies made the tube (punch blank, rib, fold, seam) the reason I say that is I have observed the front roll in either direction on the same make. Imaging the tube with no feed lips, no bottom plate retainer. If the tube was rotated, the seam would be in the opposite direction. As to the marking placement on the M.S. Little I suspect the stamping was done manually where a worker would slide the magazine tube onto a arbor, basically a rectangular support bar, and then the stamp was actuated. The variation being how far the tube was inserted over the arbor. It would be simple to put a stop so the tube would be presses against it and the stamp being activated. This would give a consistent location stamp. Back to Top |

When we discus the fold on the magazines, lets do it from the top perspective as it is easier to see the fold. Sometimes if you have trouble seeing the fold, you can check the bottom with the bottom plate off. This will be reversed, so describe it as it would be seen from the top. Folded to the left vs folded to the right ![]() These are both M.S. Little magazines. M.S. little seems to be predominately to the left, but the LU on the right pictured above is folded to the right Might just be a LU thing. Need members to check and report if the following is different than what you see. Manufacturers folded to Left Autoyer Bridgeport Rugg Manufacturing Co. Seymour Products Seymour Smith & Sons Union Hardware Manufacturers folded to the right Conntool Groetchen International J.L. Clark Keeler Brass Mattatuck Manufacturing Owens Illinois Can Stanley Works Tube Products Wade Electronics Co. |
