Back in 1976 the club was actively exchanging information and compiling lists of all know magazine markings. This information was published and updated as new information rolled in. One of our members took that information and other published information and made a webpage that most all of us know and rely on as possibly the most complete source. Attempts to contact Mr. Lukes have turned up empty. My fear is that web page requirements change and eventually his page may disappear. I see some information which may be erroneous that I would like to start a project to find out what is correct. This will be multi part due to the depth and keep it easier for all to follow. You can see he credits the Carbine Club Newsletters, Larry Ruth's War Baby, Craig Riesch's Book, Larry Horner, a club member who did several magazine updates. Larry is no longer with us. Mr. Stewart, Is anyone familiar with him? Magazine Project Part 1. Do these magazine exist. Keep in mind that dashes, dots or periods as well as primes or apostrophes are pertinent information distinguishing different markings. Same goes for being in a circle vs no circle. CB in a circle C dash IP G dash S prime G prime do not confuse with (I-P-K) I dash P dash K the dashes are very short. JLC-SG, do not confuse with the JCL- S'G' (primes) not to be confused with the K-S'G' (primes) or KSG absent the dash Just plain old R, which would suggest a direct contract to ordnance. SG in a circle We see this is reported as a larger font, so comparisons need to be made to what we usually see U-SG, not to be confused with U-S'G' (primes) do not confuse with UU with a serif font We usually see IW, IW in a circle, and IW upside-down in a circle___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ I am also open to borrowing so I can take pictures that are consistent along all markings for an eventual web page. Click colored text NOTE: I understand some have trouble navigation the forum and trying to find a post. These threads will all be in the "Ongoing Research" section which you can easily find on the main forum page, just below general discussion there is "Club Requests and Member Submissions". on desktop you can just click the sub-forum link. On mobile enter the Club Requests and you will see the sub forums at the top of that section. Edited by New2brass - Apr 05 2025 at 9:44am |

My feeling is that it needs to be done for history's sake and who else but this blog could do it?

One source of data could be the appraisers at various auction houses. I can think of one house in particular which has handled large lots of carbine mags in the last 2-3 months (I bought one of the lots myself). Perhaps they could be contacted and requested to photograph markings of future lots for historical research purposes? Make sure their contributions are publicly noted to encourage them to participate.

Very worthy. I suspect most of us did not reply because we don't have an example of any of the "do they exist" requested. Are there a susbstantial number of people who are trying for an example of each version made? I know for myself, I am most interested in three types of magazines - all 15 round versions. a. In the wrap at the right price - because the mystery of what wrap will have what magazine in it. I b. Mags that match up to the prime manufacture of my carbines. c. Those that feed well and are generic or direct USGI purchase. If one matches other items I own - bonus! |

I have around 60 or so mags. I just don't have time to go through them all right now. I'll try checking them when I get more time.

My notes on magazines can fill several pages. And I have been delving into the commercial mags as well. This way there will be a reference for the future when people are wondering what there unmarked magazine is. I did previously make posts on this but never got a response. I do need input from others, That is why we are here as a collective. Everyone is supposed to be contributing what they can. I will be doing many posts on the magazine topic. I just need to get some pictures as well as not wanting to overload the magazine posts. Slow and steady to win the race. In the mean time if anyone has a magazine not in the Lukes link please share ( I have several) Also interested if anyone has input on the ones that may not exist, and how they came to be reported.

You aren't the only one looking for an IN marked mag. I've been searching for one for 20 years. I've seen pictures, but never actually seen one. They are more elusive than an IBM/AO lineout to NPM! I have one of those and know where there are at least 4 others!

It is amazing, I have missed out on the IN several times. I once won an auction for two NIW. The auction had many magazines in the wrap which they pealed back and took pics, except this lot. They came in and were marked U. Some shenanigans I suppose, but they did refund my money. All the others were not pictured, and I have never seen an actual IN, so if someone can share a picture with me it would be most appreciated. |

Glenn, Good meeting you as well at the SOS. Enjoyed our conversations as well. On the list of suspect I can only see WI and UN large as possible, but you never know! I wonder if the UN large is just marginally bigger, or just a heavier stamping. For that you would have to compare two of them. If you see any on my want list, give me a call!

Counting variations, I have around 130 unique 15-rounder mag makers and have never seen any of the ones you listed. I've pretty much given up hope of finding any of the ones I'm missing. Now I wonder if I'm missing even more than I thought!
Thanks for the interesting post. |

I suspect most listed do not exist, but they were reported so better to put it out there just in case someone has and can confirm. You say 130 unique, is that unique markings or are you counting variations due to the bottom plates? By my account there are 100 unique markings based on font size, shape, type as well as orientation. This does not include the commercial magazines, which will be a separate post Do you have any of the I listed that are from what I am looking for, if so some pictures would really be helpful of a few of them. ALSO, do take a look at the other linked posts at the bottom of the first post, especially variations. I am confident there are many more, it is just that without something to compare to it is difficult to realize the differences.

Just bought a set of 5 mags from the same seller who sold the packed mags. 3 pieces marked IS, one unknown due to bit of rust and one confirmed marked U-SG. Will take better pictures when they arrive.

Just for fun, here are a few pics of a very rusty carbine mag that I found in a cave on Okinawa about 35 years ago. All I can tell you, is that the mag is empty and it has a flat floorplate. I found several spent carbine cases scattered in the vicinity. Can you imagine firing a weapon into a tunnel within a stone cave?! The birth of the postwar hearing aid industry?!

I recently purchased a Bavaria Forrest Police M1 and it came with this magazine.
Could it be something that the Germans made up? ![]() The quality of workmanship looks very good. The only markings are the original manufacture stamps on the back strap. IA on top one and K.I. on lower one. First time posting a picture so hope it works. Thanks, Harry Edited by New2brass - Apr 05 2025 at 9:57am |

Superdort, Waiting in anticipation! Though I suspect it is marked U-S'G' An astounding number of views on this thread. The club certainly has a lot of lurkers, which is fine, however we need help from the membership to continue. Nothing shared, nothing learned! So here is one off the list, though I suspected this one existed based on the lineouts. I also welcome pictures via email (in my profile) to see if you have anything interesting or not reported
