From what I'm looking at, the serial number is outside any of the prime contractor's SN blocks.  My point of reference is Canfield's book.

6653924 with a barrel date of 12-44

I purchased this high condition Inland "Paratrooper" from the widow of a very high level Air America pilot many years ago.  I also have the Remington Rand 1911A1 he carried in the RVN and other places in SEA.  I tried to buy his AA 18kt ID bracelet but she would not part with it.  The lady gave me a lot of other items of her husband's.  But I digress.

I'm just curious about this serial number.  I suppose Bruce could have made an error in his book, or I could be reading it wrong.  The previous owner had many exotic guns and memorabilia, fitting for a spook.

689xxxx would be in Inland's 2nd from last SN block, 6664884-7234883.  My 6653924 in not in any assigned block for any of the prime contractors.

No hand stamped 1 on the carbine.

Very interesting, what is your source for serial number blocks?

Top of forum page, click the picture, it will bring you to our web pages. Left side Table of Contents, click serial numbers

Source is "Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine" by Bruce N. Canfield, pages 281-283

I looked through your list of SN blocks and they are the same as Canfield's except NPM, QH and early Inland.  What is your source?

Tom, your serial # 6659884 falls in Inlands 2nd to last block 6629884-7234883.
If Canfield's book says something different it is either a misprint or an oversight on his part.

The club has been doing research since 1976, and published in our newsletters. http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/sale-of-ccnl-back-issues-and-quick-index_topic5769.html

Research which includes ordnance documents from the National Archives, Armories, correspondence with the actual manufacturers.
Most authors on the subject were club members
I believe CCNL 357 lists the actual contracts which lists the assigned serial numbers. This info is also in the War Baby series by Larry Ruth, who was a club member.

Some more info on serial numbers

This one points out serial ranges that have been assigned but not observed or reported.
Some of these numbers have been reported in the following posts, usually marginal gains in highest serial number reported for that block.

Canfield shows 6219689-6449867
                       6664884-7234883
                       7369661-8069660

That is why I believed my carbine was outside any Inland block AND outside other prime contractor's blocks.  The gun with this SN obviously exists so Bruce's numbers must be wrong.  I'll have to give him a call and straighten him out !! Wink

Looks like Canfield just missed serial # assignments for one of Inland's contracts.
Inland had 2 separate contracts in that serial block, one contract was for 35000 carbines which were assigned serial #'s 6629884-6664883 the other contract was for 480000 carbines which were assigned serial #'s 6664884-7234883.
