Maybe state what you’re looking for. Like…a good solid shooter or something correct? You don’t need a collector grade to shoot. Maybe not here from forum members, but somebody just might sell you something you don’t need for more money than you need to pay.

Re: Harry Viezens Fine Guns. While they have had rifles that looked legit and with an accurate description from time to time, there have been a fair number misrepresented. Buyer beware, IMO. There is enough fake and restored stuff out there that you really have to do your homework before spending big bucks on a "collector grade" regardless who sells it. There are deceptive sellers but also ones that legitimately don't know.

Agreed. Fakery being what it is, it’s close to impossible to trust anybody….that will not offer a reasonable inspection period and/or refund. There have been and might still be some great carbines still available from the Ruth collection right here on the forum and people that can document all of it.

I bought 2 Rock-ola carbine barrels from him some time back. Not very good pictures, but I took the chance. One was legit, the other a fake. I emailed them about the fake with pictures explaining why it was fake. They agreed and refunded me for the fake barrel, less shipping. They were pleasant to deal with. I can't say definitively whether or not they suspected the barrel to be fake in the first place. But regarding my comment on the rifles, I look at a lot of carbines. I don't miss much that they have had for sale. Everyone has to make their own decisions, but I see what I see. |

Very hard to start out looking for a collector grade carbine, if by 'Collector' you mean a all original as 1st issued/produced. It takes years to learn wear patterns, makers parts used during the serial range etc. Books are full of information, many are wrong. Some originals have been ruined because of 'The Books' with parts being swapped out, only to be found out later those parts were correct via parts transfers from other makers/sub contractors. Fake parts and Fake stock Stamps are another pitfall.
No shame in a good quality rebuilt GI Carbine, like the 99% out there. But I wish you the best in your search and Welcome to the Forum ![]() I'd add I have had in hand 3 Carbines purchased by 2 friends I went thru that I felt were original that came from Lock Stock and Barrel on GB, I believe these were all consignment sales. Approx. ~3 - 3 1/2 years ago. Charlie-P777 |

“Never does not mean never and always does not mean always” when it comes to carbine collecting. A lot of it is just in-the-gut. Like Charlie said….it takes years of experience and thank goodness, many members here on the forum have put in the time and effort.

Another place to check for carbines for sale (and other USGI firearms and parts) is over on CMP’s forum
Similar to the carbine club’s for sale forum suggested by New2Brass earlier in the thread. I found my carbine from a seller there a few years back, which led to a follow up with the same dealer - he is currently looking for a M1903 for me that will hopefully fit fit my window on the right balance between condition and price.
