I have a few parts in my collection that I have been unable to fully identify. Who were the subcontractors that made these parts? Where were they located? Are they still in business?
Barrel band marked “JM” Operating slide spring tube marked “Q” Magazine catch marked “HI” Trigger marked “FI” Magazine catch marked “SI” Firing pin marked “WS” Recoil Plate marked “AU” Extractor marked “DQ” If the answers exist in War Baby!, the Carbine Club News Letters or online please provide respective page#, issue# or link. Thanks in advance! |

Bill Ricca - 01/01/2011 "JM was J Mueller Furnace Company in Wisconsin. The bands were produced by May 44 thru April 45."

Thank you sling00 and New2brass. My records are now up-to-date. By the way, the extractor was actually marked "WQ" not "DQ" so I have the info on it. I also finally took the time to add the subcontractor information from the "Underwood A-Z" article to the Underwood subcontractor table in War Baby! Thank you, Dan.

The following website provides some information on subcontractor initials used on parts. I found the initials that I was interested in for my IBM and I suspect the site will be helpful. The site is: Good luck, jsmoth

That document has been discussed in the newsletter 202 Aug 1993 and supplied to us by author Charles "Chuck" Clawson, who discovered it in the National Archives. This is probably where the CMP copy is from as well. It has also been discussed on these forums. There is some inaccuracy to it. There are other ordnance documents that spell it out differently. What we have found over the years that many of these markings do not align with parts observed. CCNL 206 Chuck shared more information, the Inland subcontractors list , part numbers, and codes. Also found was another memo from Aitcheson to Neilson on some parts changes. this was followed by even more documents on parts markings which I will sum up lightly below: Ordnance required parts to be marked for accountability if there was an issue. The prime contractor had the responsibility to assign their subcontractors a code. If there was an issue it was ultimately the prime contractors responsibility. Markings are generally subcontractor initial followed by the prime contractor initial. An example is Inland's sole supplier of slides was Packard Manufacturing. The list shows Packard as PK, but all Inland slides are marked PI which is Packard to Inland. Generally most carbine parts are marked with only two letters. Standard Products generally used the system backward, meaning the S was first followed by the subcontractor code. This was because Saginaw was already a prime contractor. A firing pin marked OB-B was Olsen Brothers to IBM which fits the list nicely, however when Olsen made firing pins for Inland the marking used was SI. One would question if that pin was for Standard Products. However we know Sta Pro had 4 firing pin subcontractors, none with an I as a code. Edited by New2brass - Apr 09 2024 at 9:42pm |
