Carbine Folks:
Need your help. I acquired an early NPM carbine (mid-July, 1943 by serial number) from an auction, the carbine appeared to be almost perfect. . . . .all early NPM parts as they should be except for rear sight (replaced in field?) and replacement stock (Winnie potbelly). Here is the curious part. . . . it has an Inland type III slide. Now I read in War Baby that Inland supplied perhaps several thousand slides to NPM in 1943, but if I have this correct, these were type II (semi-circle rear box). Is there any way a type III Inland slide would be correct for this rifle? Really appreciate your help!! Thanks! Burrojack. (John)

Hi Dan,
This was a NPM carbine, which as I said, had all the correct NPM-coded parts for an early model -except for the inland slide, winnie stock, and adjustable rear sight. Early model was based upon serial number (1,508,169), and from War baby, the starting serial number for NPM and monthly production numbers, which puts my carbine at mid-July 1943. Any insights you would have into the inland slide issue would be appreciated, and do you have any thoughts on the winnie stock? I just assumed it was a replacement, although it had a NPM recoil plate(?) Thank you. (you can discuss by private email if you prefer: burrojack@mac.com) |

CCNL 125-1 shows in the serial number range of 1492000-1549999 the most observed barrels were Underwood dated from 6-43 to 8-43, So your estimate of 7-43 is probable War Baby, as you point out shows several dates of Inland sending slides to NPM. Some every month April to August 1943 For clarification are we discussing the E279 from the chart linked below? for discussion below I omitted the SG subcontracted receiver serial ranges for simplicity. CCNL 346-17 shows the E279 coming into use at Inland in the 362xxx-998xxx range the E169 (rounded) up till about 507xxx CCNL 268-2 has a chart of observed dates on barrels for Inland's first block. 507xxx being latest E169 predominates 6 and 7-43 dated barrel the range of the 362xxx-998xxx serial barrel dates is 4-43 - the end of the 1943 interesting is the overlap of the E379, but not relevant here. |
