Found this two-piece spring guide in a 39xxx Universal Gen-1. The threaded rod screws into a sleeve creating the stop. I wonder how this can be simpler than machining a one-piece guide?

I’ve never ran across one like it but I have not seen inside near as many carbines as most here have.
One can find some interesting stuff inside a commercial carbine. Maybe this craftsman was just showing out? USGI guides were designed to serve as a punch as well….this one not so much.

I suspect this spring guide was some owners way of replacing the spring guide, versus something Universal did. In all the work I've done on Universal, and the other commercial manufacturers, never seen one like this.
An owner concocting a replacement also makes sense as to why. Simply used what they had on hand. Jim |

They did a good job Jim. I have never seen one like this either. It’s still in the carbine Universal SN 39xxx from which it was discovered.

I've owned 22xx and 339xx. Larry had 323xx. I've also hands on with a number of others in that s/n range.
However ... the guy that owned Universal during those years played around with different ideas to "improve" the design or make it more cost efficient. Not always successfully. S/N 382xx had a trigger housing with the front half being aluminum and the rear half being steel. ![]() This was before they started using the rectangular shaped housings about s/n 56400. My guess is they were trying to deal with the impact of the hammer on their aluminum housings. I haven't seen another like this housing but obviously I haven't seen dozens in this s/n vicinity. So, it's possible Universal made the spring guide to test some idea. Jim |
