Original M1A1 forend stocks are almost impossible to find and if you do find any they are usually cracked/repaired and still priced outrageously.  So, until I find a suitable M1A1 forend stock I've been experimenting with modifying damaged and scrap Carbine stocks into M1A1 forend stocks for my own use. My question is, was the M1A1 forend stock made by simply using a standard Carbine stock with modifications performed at the pistol grip location ?  I have Eric's book of drawings on the M1A1 stock and his dimensions at the grip location seem to be relatively close to the dimensions on original M1 carbine stocks I have in the area where the pistol grip would need to be attached.

No, the M1A1 stocks were manufactured separately as M1A1 stocks, the manufacturing operation steps would have been very similar between the two stocks to a certain point in the process.

look at the hole fro the recoil plate screw.

Okay, so they weren't made from a "completed" M1 Carbine stock but at some point during the manufacturing process the M1A1 stocks would maybe be moved to different pieces of equipment to be complete the manufacturing process. Yes, the recoil plate screw hole is located in the center of the stock,  I have to plug that hole with a piece of walnut dowel rod.  I have the book The M1 Carbine, A Revolution in Gun Stocking.  I will have to go back and read to see if I missed any details mentioned about the manufacturing process for the M1A1 stock.  Thanks for the comments, Eric suggested soliciting some responses from this forum first.   

Two Pot stocks , one standard.
