I read that the rebuild "P" is seldom counterfeited because it lowers the value of the rifle. I also read that all Armory and contractor rebuilds outside of the U.S. were not allowed to use rebuild marks. So, theoretically, any number of M1's could be rebuilt with no historical markings. So why devalue a pristine M1 which has rebuild markings over most others that were rebuilt off-shore and because prohibited, could not use rebuild "P"? What percentage of rebuilds occurred off-shore- great question.

Not sure anyone devalues a marked rebuild over an unmarked rebuild, a rebuild is a rebuild at least in my eyes and I personally would prefer one with markings. A stock without a rebuild stamp would be of greater value for those seeking to "correct" a carbine. As far as "off-shore"? That implies aboard ship, I assume that you mean OCONUS (outside the continental U.S.).

Are you talking about the P in a circle stamp or just the letter P? I
have seen stocks that were stamped with reproduction stamps that do not
even belong on a carbine.I have also seen people pay good money on
them, clearly not knowing what they were looking at. As to a stock without rebuild markings, Sometimes they were sanded away in the process of a subsequent rebuild. I had one stock that I was stripping the wrong finish and in cleaning it up some ghosts of 2 rebuild marks appeared! Here stocks are being sanded at AA ![]() |
