I can buy this flip sight. According to the seller, it is a Saginaw S'G' sight. The base is unmarked. Leaf marked .U. What do you think?

I'll play.....
Not sure with these pictures if this is a real one, almost looks like two ridges on the bottom edges have been filed away. But besides that, I don't recall ever seeing a .U. Flip on any original S'G' Has anyone else? Ch-P777

Used sight fitment on used receivers can be a crap-shoot but I suppose the first thing is to determine if you have the correct sight, the fitment can be addressed.

Every S'G' rear sight that I've ever seen was marked on the right side with RG-S'G', B-S'G' or W-S'G'. I've never seen an unmarked one. SG did use some unmarked rear sights. the .U. on the rocker indicates an Underwood sight.

I believe that sight has been painted using a flat or low luster black.
I'd be willing to bet on it, if you purchase it... Ch-P777 |

All rear sights should have an S on the left side. Many were also marked on the right side. Markings for Saginaw have been quoted above. When the carbine was being produced time was a factor. So there would be minimal cleanup. That sight base looks like it has been filed and or sanded. This may account for the lack of markings. If the base was USGI, and the flip was never removed, it would be a sight used by Underwood. IMHO the part has lost value, and regardless of what the seller states. most collectors would find it quite suspect. |

When I look at the 1st picture of the bottom edges then look at the 'New' last picture of the bottom edges they appear to have been touched up in last picture.
Sides of base have a semi-transparent look, what finish gives you that?
May be a heavy bodied cold blue like Oxpho Creme or the thinned black flat/low luster paint I suspect. Agree with Dan, just can't see any value here, now or down the road. Ch-P777 |

The photos were taken with a phone and enlarged. That's why you can see all the imperfections. It's for sale just across the border here in Germany. I think I'll go take a look on Monday.

If you do go,
Could you take a stick pin and poke inside the U See if you can 'Lift' any of the dark finish. Act like your just checking the depth of the U stamping...... I'm more curious than I should be. Thx SD, Ch-P777

This presentation Underwood has a flip slight. I see differences. But as others have noted there were other sub contractors. On the one for sale the U is closer to the cone and the machine cut below the stamp looks angled but that could be distortion of the close up lens. |

@ painter 777 I will do that.
The seller lives right on the border between the Netherlands and Germany. About a 20-minute drive. It's a well-known stretch of road here in the region. Until the 1980s, there was a concrete barrier in the middle of this road. The Netherlands was on the right and Germany was on the left. It was always exciting there when there was a soccer match between the Netherlands and Germany. The concrete barrier is now gone and you can easily cross the border. There are advantages to living in the tri-border area. You can fill up your car in Belgium (where petrol prices are low) and do your shopping in Germany, where the meat and beer are better. ![]() Regards Rico |

This morning I crossed the border to take a look at the Flip sight. It turned out to be at a gun shop just across the border. I asked where it came from. He said that this Flip sight and also the trigger group were part of a batch of weapons and parts from a deceased collector. The family of the deceased collector sold it to him. I followed Painter 777's advice and checked with a needle to see if there was any black paint on it. This is not the case. It looks like it has been blued. I bought both of them. The price was good. I also got a discount on Norma tac-22 Ammo. €3.50 for a box of 50. I bought four boxes of 500 rounds right away. Now I can take the Radom WZ-48 to the shooting range again.

SD,
Thx for the follow up, I was hoping you'd find a faintly stamped S on the base. Ch-P777
