M1CarbineMan,
S/N 61284 was circa 1974. Based on info from first hand buyers of s/n's between 55000 and 67300. One of which bought his at Plainfield from the owner. The reinforced front lug started early 1960's and continued thru end of production. 12 groove barrels used by Plainfield were in 1963 and 1964. By 1965 they used 6 groove barrels. I have not seen a 12 groove barrel with the Plainfield P logo. The P logo didn't start showing up until the early 70's. Possible it was a leftover 12 groove they decided to use. Paratrooper stocks appeared in adds as early as 1963 and use continuedd throughout production. Not to rain on the Gunny Sgt's story but your Plainfield is not consistent with a Plainfield that was in Vietnam 1969-1970. Tall tales have been so commonplace over the years most of us are leery of them. Not possible to verify his carbine was in Vietnam but may be possible to verify if he was. Jim |

I grew up with one of his kids That Hocked the Rifle and others I Bought From the Pawn Shop.
Definately a Lifer retired USMC. I was wondering if he was Stretching it and carried a GI carbine . But He was near Death When I Talked to Him and was Starting to Run like a Record Skipping and repeating. So was Wondering Given the late Serial Number. and He had a realy Big Gun Collection including a Barret. Ive got like 5 of his Rifles and shotguns. Probably got mixed up about 2 Paratrooper Rifles. he painted all his rifles like that. But I figured the Rifle was newer. Barrel and Receiver just keep getting stacked on with no rotation. and serial number put on when it left Factory. Any Idea what the 7 on front receiver lug was?

No idea what the 7 was. Might be able to find out. Waiting to hear back from Haas.
Part of my info for learning what was done when is all the photos I've collected over time. Plainfield carbine I've bought, others have shared, captured from the internet. The latter I had to back off on as I've done the same with all the commercial manufacturers. Problem with pics is they often don't include shots of all parts, all markings, vary in quality, etc etc. I've noticed the single digit number on the bottom of the front lug of some of them. Usually it's some type of quality control or inspection mark. I'll ask Art. Jim |
