Yesterday, I took my newly acquired transition Inland M1 Carbine to Painter777, who lives about 90 minutes from me.
He dedicated his day to teaching me about it. We went to his local range for a test drive, followed by a detailed strip and cleaning back at his house. During the stripping, he taught me about the various parts markings and their condition. It was an invaluable day in so many ways. I am deeply indebted to him. Thank you, Sir!

101Abn and I met here on the forum. I believe I reached out first by PM to ask where he was located in SE Michigan as I grew up down that way. Along the way he informed me he was looking for his 1st carbine and looking for later 'updated features' that would make a dependable shooter. Between us we searched the auctions and had posted WTB's on the forums. Looked at quite a few that we rejected and found a nice one on GB. He is new to the M1 carbine so I sorta coached him along on a price range and it worked out.
He drove up and spent a long day with me shooting, tearing down, full cleaning, lubing and then putting it back together. Making a list of parts types and markings as we went along. Everything seemed to be checking out as correct parts , types, markings and wear patterns but would double check the proper CCNL later to verify. All was going well until time to put the bolt back together... So to back track, before we went to the range I gave it a quick look over and light lube. I pried the Extractor back and forth and noted how stiff it was. He tried a few different mags and ammo types while we were there to just test drive it. Accuracy was spot on with the peep (adj I.R.Co. with number) centered. I noticed the spent cases and primer hits were nice. It was throwing the brass out @ 3'0' position but only 3-4'. Made a mental note again about that Extractor. So back after cleaning and lubed when trying to reassembly the bolt I couldn't seat the Plunger and spring deep enough to drop in the Extractor. I'm telling you it was a battle. Kept thinking back about how stiff it was and how hard it was to push the Extractor out when stripping the bolt. I tried a new spring, tried a new plunger tip... etc. Same troubles and I'm trying my best because it's getting late and he had a 1-1/2+ hr drive ahead of him. He had to call it a night and headed home, but I gotta say he stayed in the game the whole time taking in everything. I stayed at it, I couldn't go to bed defeated. I had looked in the hole multiple times and had seen nothing in it. With both the original and the new plunger springs setting side x side I could see they were the same length but decided to pull out a caliper. They did measure the same length and diameter. So what the hell was going on as I looked across the bench and floor with busted bolt tool pawls tossed about. Time for a smoke... and then another. After looking and feeling around down in that spring hole and not seeing or feeling anything I grabbed the caliper and checked the inside depth on it and a stripped bolt I had. The original bolt hole wasn't as deep ? I'm wondering now how the hell did the last guy get it installed ? What the hell again, so I found a dentil type tool and bent a hooked edge on it and poked around. After a few minutes of probing I felt something. Was finally able to snag a piece of broken off old rusty spring about 1-1/2- 1-3/4 coil. Figured WTF! Had another smoke and 5 minutes later had the bolt back together. I just could not see or feel it in there. I wiped it down and laid it off to the side. Washed up and called it a night. Looked at the clock it was 10pm, I'd worked at trying to get that bolt together for nearly 2-1/2 hrs. 101Abn texted letting me know he'd made it home safely about the same time I was doing up a Email to him about what I'd found in the bolt. I'm not ashamed to say I was worn out. Passed on dinner and went to bed just happy (not grinning happy) just relieved it was back together with the Extractor having much less stiffness, opening and closing nicely. But as I laid in bed trying to wind down I had a Oh Sh!t moment. I told him I was going to headspace it. My gages need it stripped. Figured now that the busted spring coil was gone I'd just R and R it in the morning. I was looking forward to reading over CCNL 361 and the great write up by Chris A on these Inlands, this is a 5,4 mil. Then I thought about a Inland 5,4 mil having a Adj I.R.Co. rear sight WITH the part number!! Couldn't remember if these were post war or late war.... had it been changed? But when shooting it was spot on with a barrel that measures a tight 1. But I had looked at the staking which was only on the right side- front and back with that rectangular type staking. So it took a while to unwind and get to sleep. In the morning I headed down to my little shop / reload room with my first cup of coffee and 1st smoke looking over the bolt and rear sight staking. Pulled the bolt apart and headspaced with it just closing on the go guage. Would not close on the max gage. Bolt went back together smoothly, wiped it down and set it aside. 1 night before worry good to go. Head spaced great so 2nd worry also good to go. Now on to CCNL 361 which took about 30 minutes to located from my mixed up pile of them. Had my list (no receiver or barrel assembly notes yet) and looked it over to find everything was checking out. Then I went to the Adj rear sights write up in CCNL 361-9 . I read it a couple times and understood it as meaning these were war time but late war. Getting a sick feeling so I pulled out War Baby 1 and seen Larry showed use of this sight but had no serial range. I got on the forum here and instead of starting a new topic I seen my buddy Wayne was on so I sent him a PM. He replied quickly to see CCNL 361-8 and wrote Inland did use them and gave me the serial ranges: I.R.Co. 7160060 5,131,xxx - 5,547,xxx. This one here being a 5,4 !! My error because I'd seen the Flip Sights on page 8 then folded that page over to page 9. Where I found the Info High lighted above. I had completely MISSED the Chart on page 8 !! Many Thanks to Wayne, what a relief. I'm confident I would have missed that chart again. So everything is going the only way it could... Better ! I'll see 101Abn again this coming week. I'm glad I reached out and am fortunate to have met a good man who also served us in Vietnam. He is always welcome here. I have a Chipmunk buddy that stashes his Winter feed in my garage. 'Chippy' is pretty particular to company and a good judge of character. He allowed 101Abn in to his territory upon first meeting.... enough said. To all, Take what you want from this. I'd just like to add that keep up the 'Welcoming' of new members. No matter the age or how 'Silly' a first question or two might be. There are some awesome new members coming in to meet the many friendly helpful members here waiting to help. I just met one ![]() Charlie-Painter777 |

Charlie, glad I was able to help out a bit, since I have not read the newsletters cover to cover, anytime I dig for info for anyone it just helps me get a little bit smarter on these things. Also happy to hear that you got the broken extractor spring issue figured on on 101Abn's carbine.
