That picture is a legit picture of the first American Flag raised on Mount Suribachi, it was taken by SSgt Louis R. Lowrey who was a photographer for Leatherneck Magazine. It is also the cover photo for Larry Ruth's War Baby.

Rambo: Origins Before John Rambo was a gleam in his mother's eye, there was Johnathan Q. Rambo III who served in WW2. ![]() Next time we will talk about his grandfather from the great war and tales of his great grand father and the family stories from the civil war.

I guess I should have put the pic in Sunday Funnies, or may do some poking to see if there were any real Rambo's. I wonder how he fires while holding the mags? Any guesses to what kind of knife he is packing?

One that is missing the grip material. If you zoom in on the knife you can see the barrel ring on the guard and the lug slot on the pommel, looks like it may be an M4 bayonet. ![]() |

If known,
Is John Q Rambo III above in the PTO ?
The barracks in the background remind me of those my Father appeared near while in the Philippines. @Wayne, Maybe a Bullnose hand guard in your zoomed picture... Maybe ? Ch-P777 |

don’t know about the barracks but quite interesting to see both carbines with the bayonet lug and indeed with what looks like a bullnose hg on Wayne’s zoomed picture.
Just wondering how the M4, which were quite new at this time, would be with no leather anymore 🤔

Wonder if they had a lot of problems with leather and canvas rot in the Philippines or Korea? Might explain the missing leather on the handle. If it gets wet and stays wet and some of it rotted he might have just pulled the rest of it off

If the handle is bad just take it to supply and DX it and draw a new one. I seriously doubt he would have carried that bayonet. The scabbard stuck in his belt looks wonky. Might just have stuck that messed up bayonet in his belt for a photo op.

Both carbines do have bayonet lugs and adjustable sights so very well may be post WW2.

The popular opinion as to why wood handle and rubber handle M4 bayonet handles came into being is because of leather rot from from excessively hot, wet environments causing the leather handles to deteriorate. They were looking for a substitute that would last longer.

The photo is possibly1950's and the bayonet may have had plastic grips that broke or were removed.

The soldier is unnamed, I was just having some fun. Marty shared the picture and is guess is" "Those HBT trousers with the huge cargo pockets was the common Army
uniform in the Pacific. The building behind him, on the stilts, is
definitely a tropical construction. The guy (obscured) next to him is wearing loafers! Me thinks the war is over and this GI is just clowning around (although he’s got a mag in the carbines). His helmet looks brand new. " Remember, there are reports of bayo bands in the Pacific at the end of the war No comments on the scabbard? |
