    Posted: Jun 30 2024 at 2:10pm
In 2012 one of the Carbine Club’s founders, J. B. Powers, published a chart showing the “Relative Scarcity of Some M1 Carbine Variations” (CCNL 369-4) based on 36 years of Club research and data collection. I noticed that there was one prime contractor who was not mentioned at all in the 34 listed variations. Does anyone have any idea who that prime contractor might be?

Correct! Dan said he'd give Club points to the winner.

Since you are probably armed with the subject Newsletter, how about commenting on the following.

Are there any variations that could be added to J. B.’s chart that have been discovered since 2012? This should be limited to basic production Model M1’s, not other models such as M1A1, M2, T3, etc., or other variations such as prototypes and presentation carbines.

Example: Undocumented detachable spring tube receivers (S’G’ w/spring tube receiver S/N’s 3244108, 3626202, 3578295 & Underwood w/spring tube receiver S/N’s 4022xxx, 4025201, 4025211).

I've only found three UEF spring tubes documented by the Club. War Baby! pg 377 shows 300 detachable operating slide spring housings transferred from Winchester in June of 1943 to UEF, I'm guessing to repair scrapped receivers. So maybe there are another couple hundred out there. That would put them pretty high on the Scarcity Chart right alongside the mythical Commercial Controls carbines.

Hopefully others will chime in.

Both UEF and Std Pro Received 300 Spring tubes per Ruth's research.  Unknown how many receivers were salvaged by this method. But every one of the Salvaged receiver's Had to have a spare Spring tube in the Spare parts case with each carbine shipment.  So possible 150 of each maybe fewer.
I really like carbines

Another extremely rare variation is the Standard Products carbine marked "STD. PRO. CO." rather than just "STD. PRO.". As far as I know only one, S/N 1982607, is documented (WB3 pg. 1200) and it's not clear if this was actual production. WB3 says it was owned by the Standard Products plant manager. CCNL 223-2 also mentions this unusual variation, but with a different owner, also a Standard Products plant manager.

I found a second STD. PRO. CO. here.

http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/is-it-std-pro-or-std-pro-co_topic1072.html

It could possibly be the 107th receiver marked this way. Have any others been reported since Louis Dey made this post?
