I'm not sure where to post this.
There's a thread on the Smith & Wesson collectors forum about pistols in .30 carbine and in particular an  AutoMag III .30 Carbine from the late 1980s/early 1990s in a gun store's inventory. Made in Irwindale CA.

I would much rather convert a carbine to a pistol caliber than a pistol to the 7.62x33. The carbine round fired from a pistol length barrel is puny compared to a pistol round fired from a carbine barrel which results in an average increase in MV and energy of 15 to 20 percent and you don’t light up the sky or rupture an ear drum.

I have a friend that has a rather small pistol chambered in 5.56/.223. Completely absurd by any description.
