Topic: Odd marks on an IBM receiverPosted: Dec 25 2024 at 9:10pm |

I recently acquired an early IBM (3,866,xxx). When I began stripping it to detail inventory the parts I found an odd marking in ink/paint/something on the left side of the receiver directly below the rear sight. I think I can make out a period, a W or V, perhaps an S or a 5. Or maybe they are just blotches put there by a really sick mind to drive future owners nuts? Any ideas what this is? I haven't been able to find any hints yet. ![]() |

I'm now seeing " .V 53 " every time I look at it. As if it was written in permanent marker but smeared. This is like one of those Rorsarch tests the psychs use. "What do you see in this one Pvt Numbnuts?"

Nothing significant in the stock that I can see in terms of corresponding marks but it's pretty oil soaked on that side so not sure I'd see it if it were there. The only blued part in the receiver/trigger groups seems to be the bolt and that looks original. The entire weapon is correct as far as I can tell although I haven't broken down the bolt yet.

It it was marked it looks like someone covered it over. see if some rubbing alcohol or acetone (nail polish remover) will take off the non letters/numbers in a non critical area. Maybe one of the splatter looking marks. can also test a small area of a letter to see if it reacts the same way to the crossed out section

You can also try to use coconut oil to remove it, especially if it's a bluing of some type. It looks like a permanent marker or someone took cold blue and brushed it on that area

The spattering makes it look like paint? Meh, under the wood line. I wouldn't let it bother you or try to remove. Just from the one side looks like a nice specimen you have there.

I sure can't add to anything surmised in earlier posts. Perhaps only the actor that created that blog understands the reasoning behind it. I'm no help on the possible letter stamps, either. Just be glad it is behind the wood.
