I have a Saginaw SG that I bought from a privet party about 1995. It has the DCM paper work shipped from RRA in 1967. My Question is Coulld the rear PI milled adj. sight be original.? My SG ser.# 3484xxx and my book says thats to low of number. The weapon has not been re-parkerised and every part on it is SG ect. front sight, typ 3 lug and a nice J marked stock. The rear sight has all 4 corners staked.
What is your thoughts on this sight.?? Thanks for any words from the wise.

I would think that your carbine is way to early for a milled rear sight. The fact that it has what is likely a replacement stock would indicate that it probably went for a repair at some point and the sight may have been changed then. It was likely a field repair rather than an arsenal rebuild.

Smoky1, your SG was updated at some point after manufacture. The J stock is a fairly common replacement stock, and the #3 band and "incorrect" front sight tell us that the original barrel band was replaced. This was an Ordnance Dep't "Modification Work Order."
FWIW, I don't believe that SG nor S'G' ever installed any adjustable rear sights. I have two Presentation carbines, one built up in Saginaw, the other built up in Grand Rapids, both formerly owned by the General Manager of Saginaw Steering Gear Division. Both have flip sights and #1 barrel bands. But enjoy your carbine for what it is. A General Motors WWII rifle that was updated with an improved part, and a new stock to replace the original that was likely damaged. Changing those parts now will destroy its military history. CCNL 101-5 discusses the Modification Work Order (MWO) of 7 July 1945 that directed the installation of the bayonet lug. CCNL 118-2 discusses the MWO of 11 Sep 1944 that directed the replacement of the flip rear sight with the adjustable. Both of these work orders were promulgated long after both SG and S'G' were done manufacturing carbines. Regards, mb |

I new that I would get good information from all of you. Thanks so much, I realy thought that it was put on after build at some point but I was sure you guys would know. I was not changing any thing on the rifle anyway because it's history and that's the way is came from RRA in Texas. It is a very nice Carbine and everything else is SG except the 4 things. It looks like thay may have had nicer Carbines to ship out in 1967. I am very happy with it. It's the only updated ( rebuilt ) one I have. All the others that I have are the way they were born. Again, Thanks to everyone for the great informstion
Best regards to all. Smoky

It's too bad the Author of the link firstflabn / Don Hillhouse deleted the text of all but two of his posts. I don't recall what upset him, but sure wish I had his Researching Skills. Years back I found a used copy of his book, that I purchased to see if a Officer noted in it might be a old family relation. After finding out we had roots in Florida on my Fathers side during the Civil War. It was a Lieutenant Colonel D. P. Holland, Commander Company D, First Special Battalion, Florida Infantry. 1862. I had no luck tracking the name. What I liked about Don's Posts and Book was was how he noted his sources. The same he would ask of another who had made a post. His now out of print, Self Published book from 1992 is titled: Heavy artillery & light infantry: A history of the 1st Florida Special Battalion & 10th Infantry Regiment, C.S.A by Don Hillhouse Google reviews can be found on it on many Civil War Sites.
