Hi all,
Doing random researching on my Saginaw SG (no serifs), Saginaw Michigan M1 Carbine, serial # 3,436,6XX, has a 2 / 44 Underwood barrel on it. Interestingly, came upon this site https://m1family.com/a-little-history-of-saginaw-s-g-and-its-carbines-t22.html There is also a separate page for the Saginaw S'G' Grand Rapids Carbine linked there. Anyway, wanting to confirm with you more knowledgeable folks on this info I extracted from the sight to deduce legitimacy, and if Saginaw SG, in some blip in time, used Underwood Barrels since this site is listing dates and Manufacturer parts delivered to Saginaw. Perhaps, any of the CCNL's confirm some of this info(?) Any input, as always, is greatly appreciated, JB *cut and pasted from that site*: (Organized by year, 1943 - 1944) -Inland shipped approximately 30,000 barrels to S.G. in 1943. -Inland shipped approximately 2,000 rear flip sights to S.G. in 1943. -Inland shipped approximately 2,000 bolts to S.G. in 1943. -NPM shipped approximately 400 trigger housings to S.G. in 1943. -NPM shipped approximately 4,000 front sights to S.G. in 1943. -NPM shipped approximately 9,000 recoil plates to S.G. in 1943. -Rock-Ola shipped approximately 500 firing pins to S.G. in 1943. -Rock-Ola shipped approximately 1,000 rear flip sight to S.G. in 1943. -Rock-Ola shipped approximately 5,000 front sights to S.G. in 1943. -Rock-Ola shipped approximately 5,000 hammers to S.G. in 1943. -Saginaw (S'G') shipped approximately 400 rear flip sights to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 5,000 safeties to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 3,000 rear flip sights to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 4,000 triggers to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 3,700 sears to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 2,500 hammers to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 1,500 bolts to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 5,000 front sights to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 1,000 firing pins to S.G. in 1943. -Underwood shipped approximately 600 recoil plates to S.G. in 1943. -NPM shipped approximately 2,500 recoil plates to S.G. in 1944. -NPM shipped approximately 2,500 front sights to S.G. in 1944. |

JB, Keep in mind that Saginaw in Saginaw and Saginaw in Grand Rapids were the same company, same contract. If SAG and SGR swapped parts, there would not have to go through the integration committee. The very first SG marked receivers were out of the Grand Rapids plant and has IP assigned serial numbers. There are two instances where parts and receives could have been sent to the other location for finishing and assembly. See CCNL 357-11. There was also an earlier CCNL with info. Go over to the serial page and look at Table G which touches on the subject. There were receivers made by one location that have serial from other location, or at least roll die marked at the other. See the Saginaw Survey as well I have one report of a 3.438 with a U 4-44 barrel unknown if original to the carbine, but seems off for the serial number there are a few reports in the 3.47 range with U7-43 barrels

Hi thirtyround and all,
I dunno who "Naughty Monkey" or the "M1family.com" group is, but it appears that the parts-transfer information on that website was lifted from Larry Ruth's "War Baby!", copyright 1992. Larry made multiple trips to the National Archives to locate all the available records from the Carbine Industry Integration Committee (CIIC). And he paid for copying them all. Many of us (myself included) have been guilty of quoting information from Larry's books, in trying to answer someone's question, but I think it is proper to credit Larry for finding that CIIC information, especially if one is copying large amounts of Larry's work, and allowing readers to assume it is from his own expertise. Enuff said. Regards, mb |
