hey Marty, is the OPs import mark on his barrel going to be added to the web page of import marks that have been observed? Or are you guys going to try to find a better more legible example? Even though you can't technically read federal ordinance Inc, it would pretty much have to be that importer unless they were more than one importer out of El Monte Ca. I'm wondering what Jim mocks opinion is on the OP's import mark and if he had seen one like that before

Hey guys,
It's definitely a Fed Ord So. El Monte, CA import mark. I added a description of this version under the Federal Ordnance list of import marks. An image of this one is a challenge to take for several reasons. Also to make it legible on the web page. Zooming in, the letters on the left or right are out of focus as the barrel was held at an angle. Not complaining, it's just a difficult pic to obtain. It doesn't surprise me to see several variations of the letters used or their different locations on the barrel. Bob Brenner, owner of FedOrd, indicated they were surprised to find carbine receivers and barreled receivers in what they thought would be a shipment of M1 rifles. He said they didn't want to take the time to reconstruct them into complete carbines and just wanted to get rid of them. Brenner didn't standardize the import marks or apply them himself. He just said get it done. So we may see others that are a little different that what is shown. When I can obtain a better pic of this one I'll add it. Difficult pic to take. Thanks for trying. Jim |

I have some knowledge but definitely have my limits. Dan is my walking talking encyclopedia of all things GI carbine. Credit also goes to everyone here, and club members over the years who reconstructed the history.
We all do what we can. Keep at it folks. We need you. Jim |

I have a 3/43 Underwood with an Arlington Ordinance import stamp under the barrel. It has indicators of a Bavarian return, dark blue-black barrel, bolt and receiver and the plum colored trigger group. However the majority of Arlington Ordinance imports were returns from South Korea. I've gathered this info from this site.

Any other indicators? Not sure I would automatically assume Bavarian just due to a dark finish and plum TH.

No on the contrary, I believe it to be a South Korean return. It's odd that it has the same coloring traits as Bavarians do. There is none of the common physical evidence of it being possessed by the Germans. The Koreans must have used a similar chemistry when refinishing their carbines to what the Germans used. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear.
