Hi Here a picture of a band of partisans in Italy. This was in Montefiorino, near Modena, probably around second half of ‘44. On the mid right you can clearly see a M1A1. Does anybody know anything about US supply to partisans in that area or US troops relationships with Italian rebels? Cheers |

Looks like the muzzle end of another M1 carbine being held by the man on the lfet in the top row. I see a couple of M8 subguns in the picture too.

I recall, but can not find, a previous discussion about this. My recollection was that a book about small arms, or maybe equipment in general, was going to be published in Italy. My recollection is that after the King surrendered to the Allies, Italian Army troops that were operating with Allied units were supplied by the the forces they were working with. The partisans were generally supplied with British arms such as sten guns - in part because the 9mm ammunition could be sourced locally? I am very interested to learn more. Hopefully you can help us.

Hi!!! Yes it sounds to me something like that happened. I know for sure that some us material has been used by resistence and after on by the cooperating italian army. A trench knife M3 has been inheritated from a partisan. British surly gave some weapons. Stan rifles as clearly showned. It makes also lot of sense that 9mm rounds could be more useful for some italian weapon used. But as far as i know not many…mab38 sub mg, and as pistols they used 9 corto (short) that is 380 acp. I will try to figure smthg out. It is an interesting topic! |

You may have better luck with websearch in Italy than I have from the USA. This may be the book I saw referenced, and now translated into American English. I do not know if it will help answer the question of how and why the men in this photo were supplied. Do you know anything additional about the photo, when it was taken, who are the people? There is a short paper on the CIA website https://www.cia.gov/resources/csi/studies-in-intelligence/studies-in-intelligence-spring-1998-edition/the-oss-and-italian-partisans-in-world-war-ii/ And a declassified paper related to the OSS/CIA from John Hopkins University "Allied Supplies for Italian Partisans during WWII" T. M.Condit Technical Memo ORO-T-269 1954 |
