In about 1998 I was in a gun store where I spotted a large stack of M1 Carbines in boxes. I ended up buying one and it has been sitting in my gun safe up until recently when I decided to get out and take it to the range. In preparation for that I wanted to learn as much as could about it and then take it to a gunsmith to make sure it was safe to fire. To the best of my recollection it was sold as a newly manufactured rifle made from genuine USGI surplus parts with a new stock. All of the parts except the bolt look likr brand new.

The receiver was manufactured by Inland and today discovered the barrel was made by Herlon. It is date stamped 6-73 Lot 3. The serial number starts with a 55 and I read on another forum that Herlon Barrels that start with 55 were not chromed and that people were using them without any problems.

It is a big disappointment to find that have a reject barrel and I'm not sure how to proceed. I don't know if I should get a new barrel, get a new rifle, put back it the safe as a keepsake or have it checked out to see if it is safe to fire. Considering the number of these that were in the gunshop when I bought it I would guess that that people have been shooting them without problems.

Does anyone have any advice?

I can only speak for myself but I never had any problems with mine.
I have a Postal-Meter with below shown Herlo Barrel. It is the carbine that I am using for our M1 Competitions over here.
I know that the Herlo barrels were rejected (see also http://www.billricca.com/myths.htm) and was very worried when I found it out. But finally it works very well

Thanks for the response. I had a gunsmith check it out and he told me the barrel was fine.
