I was using military ball ammo. The gasoline started to
leak while I was firing and then the fire started as I
comtinued to shoot.

The car did not blow up and the fire started small and
then spread,  finally consuming the car before the FD
arrived.

No doubt it was just a lucky shot....

I fired the carbine in rapid fire (semi) hitting the veh
a number of times.  The results was the gasoline tank
was hit which caused a fire.  The fire got out of control
and the fire dept was called to put the fire out.  That put
an end to that exercise.  :)

Yeah, those North Korean and Chinese winter coats must have been pretty darn thick.

I thought your story was classic.   I don't know if stuff like that is done these days.

Sometimes it doesn't take much heat or more than a single spark to get material burning.  Fuel is certainly one of the easier things to ignite in a car that hasn't been drained.  A few years ago a  well known, and very competent racing tech got severly burned by a fuel fire sparked by static electricity (Ryan Brown Racing). As we discussed in another thead, .30 carbine ball ammo used a jacket of thin copper layered onto soft steel.  Steel through steel or any hard surface could have easily produced a spark.

oh yes, once gasoline starts leaking out of the tank, anything could happen from that point if you keep firing at it

Shot placement!
During D Day in the morning a fellow took an 8mm JS through his rib cage and fought all day.

Within 200 yards if the 30 Carbine didn't kill, the target was armored, missed or hit in a non-vital area.
