Here are two of the Austrian proof marks on the rifle, not sure you can make the one on the barrel out without enlarging it.

*EDIT* Lupus Dei: Cropped pictures added Wink

Hard to tell as pics get fuzzy when I zoom in. All I can see is W Winchester mark. Would be great to see close ups of the other marks. Never seen marks in those locations, should be a great learning experience. Thanks.

Information Attached
the eagle that looks more like a anemic
vulture is the Austrian Bundesadler (Federal Eagle).

Wien is Vienna, Ferlach is a town in the Austrian land/state of Carinthia and well known for it's gunsmith history.

The combo NP adjacent the eagle indicates it was tested with Nitro based powder. The V indicates the Vienna proof house, F indicates Ferlach.

The NDF I'm not certain on. I think it's why the carbine was proof tested, as opposed to a date code as is often the case with other countries to indicate when it was proofed.

I've been researching the U.S. Carbines used by Austria for the past 10+ years. I have info from many different sources as to the quantities they had, which agencies used them and their disposition. Some of the sources conflict with one another, which isn't unusual. But I've been tracking which agencies in Austria used them, if they put any markings on them and the quantities each had.

I know for sure INTRAC in Knoxville, TN purchased and imported 7,991 U.S. Carbines from Austria. I own several of them. They do not have Austrian proof marks, they do have the INTRAC import mark. INTRAC was going to bring in more from Austria but was stopped by a change in U.S. import regulations.

Between 2002 and 2009
Euroarms Italia of Concesio-Brescia, Italy, sold U.S. M1 Carbinesin Europe they had bought and imported from Austria. All of these had been used by the Austrian version of Customs, Zoll. These were identified as Zoll carbines by the letters ZW with a 4 digit inventory number on the bottom of the trigger housing. These carbines have the Austria proof marks. The Euroarms website indicated they received carbines ZW 0001 through ZW 3850. Both Euroarms and INTRAC have verified these were part of the 2nd shipment INTRAC was prevented from importing. I have a web page devoted to Zoll that shows some of the carbines received by Euroarms at:

    http://www.bavarianm1carbines.com/Zoll.html

CMP has received two shipments of carbines from the U.S. Army that were returned by Austria. CMP received the first shipment of over 7000 carbines in December 2007. The second shipment of approximately 1300 was received by CMP about a year ago. These do not have Austrian proof marks.

My understanding is Austria did not use to require proof testing when carbines were sold to an importer/exporter for civilian use outside of Austria. Such as those sold to INTRAC. Sometime in the 1990's that changed, as shown on the carbines obtained by Euroarms. Since the carbines CMP received were returned to the U.S. Army by Austria they were not required to proof test them.

Until I saw your carbine and it's proof marks, I was unaware of any that had made it back to the USA other than INTRAC and CMP.

I can account for all of the carbines used by the Austrian Gendarmerie and where they went. With the exception of the Austrian Gendarmerie in Burgenland. Theirs have turned up in Europe. I assume they were sold to an importer/exporter there at some point. According to INTRAC, before they received theirs. I can also account for those used by Zoll, all of which went to Euroarms. I tried to import one but U.S. laws have prevented it.
