Hey guys, first post and all and already looking for help. One reason I joined up is the prospect of possibly about to purchase a carbine. I've wanted one for years and just never "pulled the trigger" or " bit the bullet" so to speak. Pun intended. Anyway, I assume you guys won't mind helping or else what's the point of sitting on a forum yakking about carbines?
So, I've been looking at a National Postal Meter carbine. I haven't seen it in person yet. Only pics. They say it was in the first run or batch. They got it priced like they think its all original and untouched cause that's what they were told and that's what they told me. I already know its been through at least one rebuild cause it has a bayonet barrel band and a modified mag release. I can't make out a single cartouche on the stock. Doesn't mean they are not there. I just don't see any. It's at a pawn shop so I'm already behind the 8 ball. They've already told me they'd take $950 + tax and that's about it. If it checks out solid, hey, I'm alright with that. But if it doesn't, how do you convince someone it just ain't worth it? Or is it? I don't know. I'd like to have it. But the stock needs some cleaning. Not restoring. Just a little cleaning. I have a few pics. I'd love to be able to IM or email them to someone with a little more experience to take a look at. I'm ready to buy. Can somebody help? Thanks a bunch. Matt

Matt, top of the general discussions is a sticky on buying you first carbine.
You can upload and post pictures here, no photobucket needed.
The price is widely dependent on many things.. define early (serial range)
Is it all correct(ed) or complete mixmaster. Etc.
In help (top) section is a thread on posting pics. Any problems just PM Me.

I'm doing my best to take a crash course in carbine indentification as far as parts and what might be correct for a particular time period. If I don't find any questionable parts to lead me to believe the rifle was thrown together I'm gonna lean towards it being close to original since it came back from the arsenal rebuild. I'm gonna try and get the history on the rifle and why the store is so adamant on promoting it as so original and untouched. It didn't take me long to study and find out that there are a wide variety of combo's that can be made and a lot of attention must be paid to what you are getting. I truly don't think it's a mixmaster, but I'll know more once I see it in person. I'm gonna try and post up a few pics. Thank you very much. Matt
