We have received many, many emails and phone calls about this CMP offering on the carbines.
The 2 big questions are: Q. Do we still have CMP affiliation? A. Yes we do! We are listed as Carbine Collectors Club #24234 which is the same number for years past. However for current eligibility you would have had to be on the 2015 CC/CMP roster and a member here. Unfortunately new members were not on that list as it requires more verifiable information then required to join forum. We are working on the details on adding new forum members to our CMP roster. Q. Any Idea where these carbines came from? A. It is hard to say and a lot of speculation. One of our members that was helping down there had the following to say: "I saw that email from CMP, and as I’ve told others in the last day or two, I
suspect those carbines are the ones that were left over in boxes when Tommy
left. CMP was in a big hurry to “work” carbines when we were down there - they
were swamped with orders - and if any carbine needed more than minimum time to
make ready, it was set aside for later when time would allow. This included bent
barrels, missing rear sights, damaged front sights, barrels where we couldn’t
get a bolt to headspace, a couple obviously-abused “sprung” bayonet bands, bolts
and entire carbines that were so gummed up with dried cosmoline that parts
wouldn’t move, broken or missing front swivels, missing stocks, etc. We were
short a lot of stocks. And we ended up with a box of “frozen” bolts, and every
one of them would have taken quite a while to de-gum..with a bolt tool, of
course, and CMP didn’t have any bolt tools! My guess, and it’s only a guess, is that they’ve had lots of time to prepare those guns in the intervening years. And I know, that from talking to the armorers last year in Phoenix, they were running out of work and management was trying hard to keep them busy, to protect their jobs. Hence, they were discouraging volunteers to show up, preferring to give all gun-work to the armorers. We’ll see what you forum guys report. I know a lot are interested, and I suppose -
for the price - it’s a fairly good deal. Those who get one should be able to
sell it at a modest profit if they are disappointed.” With that I suspect many diamonds in the rough could be found. If there is a problem the CMP always seems to make it right!

I picked up a CMP Inland at auction. It was fantastic but FP was locked up with hardened grease. Cleaned it up and it was great. Maybe need to send those boys (and gals) a few bolt tools!

I argued with myself on whether to order one or not - as usual, its not the best time to order one - but I did it anyway.
Hope to hear what others got and when

I wonder about the condition of the next 1,000 carbines the Army is releasing. Those who don't make the first cut maybe very happy they made the second.

Evidently was crazy at the two stores this morning, they released about 30 at the North Store, assume same number at South
Store... If i lived closer, I might do that for the experience, but otherwise, its too crazy for. One guy was there at 8PM last night and there were already 20 people in front of him :) |

At the stores I heard the first 30+ people allowed in
For the carbine sale, DBU's are still being worked on - a handful of people have said they received them - long time members are saying it might be another week for the first 1,000 and then anywhere from another week to a month for the 2nd 1,000

Should be interesting to see who gets the best one and its condition. All things considered, I've been very happy with CMP's processing time. Don't have to worry about that this time but we will see what other goodies are waiting for auction. Saw some FG and SG Rock's show up recently along with an M1A1. Makes sense to have a slow build up to the good stuff.

Took me just over a month to get confirmation that I made the cut on an order I put in on 1 Feb. Once I got E-Mail confirmation it took less than a week for me to receive the Service Grade Carbine.
I am very happy with the purchase. This was my first carbine purchase. I bought a Garand from CMP about 4 years ago. The Carbine I received has a Quality Hardware receiver (478XXXX) with a Inland MFG Div, General Motors 1-44 barrel. The exceptionally nice stock is marked OI. According to research I have done so far the OI is Overton for Inland. It only has a few cartouches on it: SA/SHM; and cross cannons. The front band is SA. The bore is bright with no visible pitting. Tag that CMP put on it says Muzzle Reading 1+; Throat Reading 1+. I still have to completely disassemble in order to get more info on the other parts. The only other visible marking I see thus far is on the mag release. Holding it horizontal, trigger housing down, it's an M. As good of condition this carbine is in I doubt seriously it saw any wartime action. Is it safe to assume, even though Quality Hardware never made an entire carbine (based on limited research I have done thus far), that it would be considered a Quality Hardware Carbine since the receiver is Quality Hardware? |

Hi Chief, good for you! I haven't heard a peep. Most of those that have received Carbines and posted on the CMP Forum sent their papers, Priority, FedEx, UPS etc. I sent mine US mail, so I think I'm out of luck, regards, Mike

Your a little off base on this one. QHMC delivered approx 359666 complete carbines to the Govt. QHMC had subcontactors make parts that were marked for QHMC. An example would be the extractor marked W-Q made by Wadsworth Watch Case Co. As a subcontractor to QHMC. Wadsworth case also made extractors for Inland W-I, IBM W-B What is true is that QHMC only produced/manufactured one part, The Receiver. So yes, your carbine is a QHMC. But if it has a mix of parts meant for other prime contractors it would be considered a mixmaster. With that i must add that if someone comes accross a carbine with one or two parts not expected for a specific prime contractor that it would be a fools errand to "correct" those parts. There were transfers of parts. So there very well can be a all correct QHMC that has a Rock-Ola firing pin or complete trigger housing that left the factory that way. |

Thanks for the reply. I guess I did not explain as well as I thought. What I meant was the research I had done thus far indicated that Quality Hardware only manufactured receivers, though I was unaware they actually assembled full carbines.
I guess until I disassemble and check all the parts it would be too early to tell if it's a mixmaster? I'll continue to do research that will hopefully give me a better idea of what parts were/were not subcontracted by QHMC or that QHMC would get from other manufacturers of all the parts. Thanks again for the reply as just researching these great historical rifles is a lot of fun. |

I was one of the lucky ones to get a CMP carbine on the go around. I received a Field Grade Quality H.M.C. on March 17th...it was like Christmas for me. LOL. SN# 46663XX Barrel: Underwood, dated: 11/43 Piston: Marked RI Front Sight: Rock-Ola, marked RP Rear Sight: Type II, marked with H in a shield Bolt: EM-Q (need to get a bolt tool to identify firing pin, extractor and ejector) Trigger Housing: Winchester (all Winchester parts) Operating Slide: Inland marked PI Stock: Type III, marked M-U with a circle P on the grip Barrel Band/Swivel: Type III marked MMQ/EM-Q |

I ordered a service grade and crossed my fingers. One month later I receive my Carbine, a beautiful Underwood with the bavarian Police markings. It is in excellent condition and shoot excellent with Promag 15 round magazines. As soon as I received the email confirmation I purchased 500 rounds of ammo from the CMP and ordered a reproduction sling, oiler and two mag pouch (which I do not attach to the stock. Lovely little Carbine and I could not be happier with my first rifle purchase from the CMP.
