I was at the Hampton Va Gun Show and my friend and dealer from the Daytona Beach area had “something Special” he wanted to show me. He explained he was as at a show up around NewYork area and a customer wanted to Sell an IBM M1Carbine. He explained his father use to word at the Poughkeepsie Ny IBM plant during the war.  His father recently died and he found it in one of his father’s closets. He then pulled out the carbine and showed it to me. It looked as though it had never been fired or seen thee light of day. 

All BRB High Wood without a mark on it an a crisp clean cartouche right where it should be, IBM Barrel (No Date, No Bomb but there is a stamped “P” no shadow of a type 3 barrel band), front Sight w/ “N”. Rear sight SI B Flip. BE B Trigger Housing, AOB bolt, SWB sear, AMB hammer. 
Honestly it is so pristine, it looks as though it has never been fired. Receiver is IBM S/N is 37007xx

My honest opinion is that it was either some type of presentation for loyal service or a possible “Lunch Box” riffle. 

What I would like to know is if any of the “Old Guard” here would like to examine it to verify that is is in fact a real IBM or did I get fooled over something so pretty

DA1 CPO,

Your carbine could very well be a "lunchbox special," or it could be a so-called "presentation " carbine.   Either way, it should not have a crossed cannon stamp on the stock, as that is an indicator of "final acceptance" by an Ordnance Department inspector, ie. government property for which IBM billed the Ordnance Department for....This forum has a host of very experienced collectors who can examine your photos and give their opinion of what you have. Thanks Marty I appreciate thee info a lot. I did a basic field strip to check most of the parts and markings to make sure they were correct. I honestly don’t know when the Stock Cartouche was added. It could be that it was taken out of the barrel or tray on its way to the final assembly line. Only God Knows 😁. 

I do know the stock does NOThave the “Circle P” stamped into it. That would tell me it’s closer to a “Lunch Box” than presentation

Please post pictures of the top of the receiver and the top of the bolt. Missing proof punches might be a clue. "Lunchbox specials" and "presentation" carbines are often missing these marks.

IBM never used the circle P on the bottom of the grip.   

The crossed cannon stamp was applied to the stock as the last step in the proof-firing/targeting/inspection process. It was called "the final acceptance stamp." The carbine was then government property. That is why "presentation" carbines lack the crossed cannon stamp; they were never government property.

Y'know Chief, there is one possibility, re: your minty original carbine, that we haven't discussed.

You might've totally lucked out with an unissued factory-original IBM that was declared "unserviceable" by the military, and sold by the DCM via the NRA Sales Program in the early 1960s.

As crazy as it may sound, unissued WWII carbines were declared unserviceable at that time if they lacked the parts that had been deemed "standard" for the M1 Carbine. In other words, if a carbine lacked the bayonet lug, adjustable rear sight, and rotary safety, it was obsolete.

Over the decades, I've seen maybe a dozen minty original carbines that had been sold thru the NRA Sales program, including Winchester (both early and 5 million range with #2 band), UN-Quality, and Irwin-Pedersen! Yeah, hard to believe!

Of course, the vast majority of the NRA Sales Program carbines had been rebuilt; however, a number of buyers seemed to have gotten very lucky!   We hope you got one!
