The first picture was my first Carbine. It had just been issued to me by our battalion armor. I only had it for a little over a month.
Picture was taken in January 1968 at our battalion HQ on Hill 37 located southwest of Danang. I always wanted another Carbine, but it was not to be for another 50 years. Fast forward to June 2018 when I purchased my second Carbine thru a CMP auction. It is a nice service grade Rock-Ola with a 1943 build date. Love it! ![]() ![]() |

Great photo of you in Nam with an M1 Carbine and great story. Your latest one looks good, too. Hats off to all those that served and experienced an M1 as a duty weapon! Thanks for sharing.

Great looking Rock-Ola. Looks to be in really clean condition for a service grade carbine. Nice buy!

Thanks Guys!
I have been working on the Data Sheet for my Rock-Ola. Some of the items are very difficult for me to figure out what type or shape they are. But, I am almost done. I still need to disassemble the trigger group; it scares me that I will not get it back together. |

The 1st data sheet is always a little hard to figure out, when you get stumped ask questions. As far as the trigger housing goes it is really a piece of cake, a cut down trigger pin helps when putting it back together (keeping the sear, spring and trigger as an assembly) I have also found that a broken piece of a wooden Q-tip also works. Again if you run into a problem, ask questions on this forum. There are some great how to videos here. http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/how-to-videos-and-links_topic1084.html |

Great post, awesome carbines both past and present, and most importantly thanks for your service over there!
Anybody else noticing anything unique about the carbine pictured in Vietnam?? Are my eyes deceiving me, or is it lacking a type 3 band/bayo lug? Rear sight looks to be an adjustable if I had to guess, but even it is kind of blurry to my eyes. I'd love to own a Rockola like yours someday. Not sure you can get a cooler carbine than a Rockola:) |

LMTmomoMan,
You are correct about the VN Carbine. There was no bayonet lug and it did have an adjustable rear sight. I have no recollection of any marks on the barrel or stock. Is it possible this it was an original build and never went through the post-WWII rebuild program? I guess a Marine Corps armor could have added the adjustable rear sight. Being new to collecting Carbines, I do not know if any Carbines were originally built with an adjustable rear sight. I do love my Rock-Ola; it "rocks"! I have had it apart several times to clean and inspect (except the Trigger group). I also cleaned the stock with some mineral spirits and pure tung oil. It shoots great. I take it to the range each month with my Marine Corps League detachment. I have fired about 300 rounds thru it and have never had a jam, misfire or failure to load. I am using some Korean 15-round mags which work fine. Last night I just picked up a new addition to my collection...a NPM Carbine that was used by the Upper Austria Rural Police (Gendarmerie) after WWII. It was acquired in 2008 by the CMP from the US Govt. It is still in the original padded box (including all CMP documentation) used when the CMP sold it in 2009. The gentleman I got it from only had it out of the box once; it has never been disassembled or cleaned. Stay tuned for more details and pictures. ![]() Semper Fi, Bruce

Now that sounds like a great find, I am still hoping to add a Bavarian carbine to my collection, I regret not buying a few when the CMP was selling them back then. If you haven't already check out this sites section on Bavarian Carbines, lots of info. http://www.bavarianm1carbines.com/ |
