There is a contract for "Carbine Sight Bases" that was awarded during January 1945 and final delivery was in March 1945
This is about a year after the adjustable rear sights were adopted.

We know ordnance was pushing to update the rear sights in the field and there are several articles by Don Hillhouse of the earliest reporting of field upgrades. These were in the newsletters and more findings published below.

We know Hemphill was making milled adjustable rear sights for Inland marked H.I.  and Winchester H in shield.

Packard was making milled rear adjustable sights marked PI

Springfield Armory made, or contracted adjustable milled rear sights, but unclear when.

Some Hemphill and SA sights have been reported with a C or CH on the bottom of the rear sight.

We are asking everyone to check their milled adjustable rear sights and report the bottom marking as well as any manufacturers marks on the left or right side

If you turn a carbine upside down you should be able to see the marking with over head lighting. A flashlight may be easier

If you sight is on a late carbine and appears original, please share the serial number as well.

My spare, loose SA marked rear sight has no letters on the bottom. Adjustable PI marked rear sight on my carbine has nothing on the bottom of it either.hth

Have seen Small Shield H with C and another with CH.
Could the C mean made by Crescent Manufacturing Freemont, Ohio for supply?
CH, made by Crescent for Hemphill contract?

*Remembering the SC marked bottoms on Stan Pro Flip Site Bases.

Charlie, I do not believe the C stands for Crescent. The H may be Hemphill, and why I am asking guys to check all the milled sights.

I have two carbines with the adjustable milled sight, neither have any marking on the under side of the rear ledge that I can find.

The Underwood has the stamping for Inland on the right side front of the knob.

The NPM has a P l stamped front of the knob.

Type II Milled Small Shield / H sight, stamped C on the bottom. The sight is not original to the rifle.
