Topic: First Carbine Rebuild QuestionPosted: Sep 12 2025 at 5:22pm |

Hi all,
I recently picked up my first carbine. I’ve wanted one for a while and was glad to find one for a decent price. I’ve been reading through information on this site and believe this was likely a November 44 assembly. The parts are a mixture of different manufacturers, but I don’t see an import or rebuild mark anywhere. Is it possible that it did not go through rebuild? Thanks in advance for any information, I’m excited to learn what I can of its history! |

The barrel was made 10-44. It was assembled into a receiver some time after that. Roughly a month seems to be the average (based on the ones we know). Ruth & Duff estimated carbines in that range were completed Jan to March 1945. I think its fair to say that the carbine has been rebuilt or overhauled and parts have been changed. As you fill out a data sheet and share here some of these may be identified. The stock looks to be stamped M-U and then heavily sanded and refinished. So even if it was overhauled in one of the known armories that stamped the stocks, might not ever be able to know that.

Seeing what appears as some repark and the unmarked replaced gas piston suggests more than a cleaning party.
Original barrel to receiver. Did you look Frt sight over to see if the pin appears to have been removed? I asked on the CMP forum. Was wondering if the MMQ Type III Bayo band was used by Inland in this 62507xx? Never followed up.
It's a mix master for sure, but not having the original stock, we'd only be guessing at a armory/depot rebuild. Odds would suggest post war / armory though, but most were. Maybe never got a rotary safety or previous owner replaced it? Most important question..... Have you shot it yet? Welcome ![]() Ch-P777 |

Thanks for the replies. Yes the stock was definitely refinished. Painter777 I apologize, I saw your initial reply on cmp but not your second. The front sight pin finish is worn so I would assume it was removed. Seems like consensus is that it was rebuilt, which is fine by me, just curious about it. And unfortunately no! I haven’t had any range time since I bought it but I’m hoping to get out soon!

Painter. Riesch says no on the MMQ. (I haven't checked Ruth.) Nittany86. If you're in the SE, send me a PM if you want to meet up at the State Range. I'd like to run up there anyway to get some practice in before the next match. I think the 1944 edition of the FM 23-7 is the best reference for users. A shorter manual is the early one produced by the Tank Destroyer School (Ft Hood). A copy of the ais available at www.TankDestroyer.net Reprint copies of both are available from https://www.nicolausassociates.com/M1_Carbine.htm

CCNL 372-5 Inland update lists the T3 bands used by Inland, MMQ not on list page 3 shows the approximate barrel ranges observed to serial number in this block. There should be a punch mark on the barrel approximately 1/2"forward of the receiver. CCNL 356-2 through 8 "M1 Carbine Type 3 Barrel Band" addresses all of the T3 bands.MMQ has noted that these bands have been observed on Winchester carbines that appear to be original, but no documentation to confirm. Ref CCNL 355-4, 5 Winchester 6 & 7 million update

Matt, Dan Thx.
Nittany86, These old Carbines all have a story to tell. It might take getting another and catching the two swapping war stories late one night. Ch-P777

New2Brass, I checked and there is a punch mark on top of the barrel, just forward of the receiver. Painter, for now I’ll have to hope I catch the carbine and Garand talking Matt, sent a pm Thanks again to all for the info! |
