    Posted: Mar 16 2026 at 4:22am
Hi,
I just came across pictures of an « highly customized » Carbine, so higly customized that it is impossible to give a serial or even a manufacturer, with no marking neither on the receiver nor on the barrel. And I have very few pictures. The only marking I can see is an A on the underside, so I believe it to be a Winchester TH.

But one picture is interesting as it shows an unusual mag catch, not serrated but checkered! The Safety is also checkered.

Any idea?

Custom carbine, parts customized. I have seen it before.

If you take pictures of all sides of the receiver I may be able to identify it

When I see the operating slide, I imagine it can also be a homemade mag catch, but I can’t check

When Ruth says prototype, it may be from the Winchester 13 day gun, which used a Win 07 trigger housing.
Winchester 0, the very first made M1 carbine from the blueprints has a serrated catch, which may be different from actual production. Changes were made to the blueprints after Carbines 1-5 and 6-10 were made.

I am not so sure that is a USGI receiver. Look at the slide detent used to hold the slide back.
If USGI there is a lot of welding and forming. Look at where the recoil plate would have existed.

Yes, there was a lot of welding made on it. I asked the seller for more informations and pictures, but no answer… And he is too far away.

Winchester second prototype

As you can see it is retained differently. I would say it is a one off
