The person from whom I purchased the Experimental M1 carbine case and Winchester trigger housing owns a very special Winchester stock. This is an early (high-wood) Type II Winchester stock, converted into a hunting stock with beautiful woodcarving, a Winchester buttplate, a nickel-plated recoil plate, and a matching, similarly carved, Winchester handguard. This is the story of the stock
This original, custom-engraved M1 stock was a gift from the 19th U.S. Army Corps “Tomahawk” to Rudolf Leonhardus Hubertus Josephus Maria, Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg, Lord of Neubourg (1884–1952), member of the Gulpen Municipal Council, member of the Limburg Provincial Council, and chamberlain to Queen Wilhelmina. The stock features a commemorative plaque. Among other items, the count received a fully nickel-plated Winchester carbine, converted into a hunting rifle, as a gift for hosting, among other things, the headquarters of the 19th Army Corps at the castle in Gulpen and other outbuildings in 1944. The 19th U.S. Army Corps, with its 30th Infantry Division (Old Hickory) and 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels), was part of the 1st U.S. Army that liberated South Limburg in September 1944. The count later had the existing plaque affixed to the stock. Here are some photos of the stock. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Regards, Rico

Say Superdort, we in the Carbine Collectors Club really appreciate your participation in our group. You are a great asset to our continued research into "carbine-ology." We've learned a lot from your posts.
But I must tell you that Americans, in general, mock royalty. No matter the nation, America has never understood royal families. After all, we went to war against the King of England in 1775 before America was even a nation. Just 13 colonies. Anyhow, when we hear about a Count, I think most of us chuckle because we remember "The Count" on the childrens' TV show "Sesame Street." There was a muppet (a puppet) called The Count, whose role it was to teach children how to count. He was dressed in black clothing like Count Dracula, and he would say things like "I zee (see) VON (one) apple, I zee TWO apples, I zee TREE (three) apples! Our kids thought he was wonderful, and we parents got a good laugh out of his antics. I'm sure you can find him on youtube. Sesame Street, The Count. Anyhow, I just wanted you to know, that any comments you may hear from us, about Counts or any kind of old European royalty, is said in jest. No disrespect intended to anyone or any nation's history. Thanks again for your strong participation in our club! Regards, mb |

No problem; people here make the same jokes about the royal family. I received a clear photo of the plaque this afternoon. I also asked what happened to the rest of the M1. The owner of the stock couldn’t answer that. He was able to tell me that the entire carbine was sold at an auction in Brussels in 2011. A few years ago, he acquired/purchased the stock in this condition.
