Pics over cardboard attached. I also noticed an “SI” stamp on the barrel band with the gas piston.

look at top of barrel band, the part that holds handguard down--it looks like pitting parked over???? Is possible is just blasting though by maker of band--your trigger house looks to be original finish--I have never seen a HI with flaming bomb but it looks legit--any way you look at it it will be restored and its worth double what you paid regardless of if original or redone--the receiver looks refinished as does not show the two tone finish but some were refinished at factory--thanks for posting--it is worth of restoring as just looks so good--is possible is one of Larson"s collection--some of his new wood was really crappy looking and some of his parts really stood out as repro but some was real so is possible someone got rid of the fake looking sight he would have put on--need to go over it with a lighted 20X jewelers loop--us carbine collectors forget 95% plus of garands are refinished

look at very first fotos of the 9-42 barrel marking area--it looks refinished over some very minor pitting-I vote its a Larson or Horner gun but I think hammer is real-I think Floydthecat was spot on

For Inland, The hammer preceding type 1 HI dogleg hammer was an H in shield with an ordnance bomb.
Both made by Hemphill, just marking requirement change.
Marcus points out the HI is usually absent the ordnance bomb. I have not gotten to checking notes, but I do not think the HI has ever been reported with the ordnance bomb. the earliest reported HI was in the 478xx range which is not to far off of this carbine. It may be the fires few thousand or so had the ordnance bomb until dropped. The HI type one was used into the 6 digit range until the type 2 hammer was introduces.

I will have to ask someone take on the math if there is interest,

Certainly not cheap, but whatacountry.com has carbine stocks.   I picked up one for the bubba'd/ sporterized Inland I picked up a few years ago.  That was before carbines got crazy popular and I think I paid $59 for the stock I got.  It had a hairline crack down the right side that was easily repaired and is pretty much invisible, so was exactly what I wanted/ needed.

I was able to find an inland high wood I cut stock at Apex gun parts last night for $99 without metal.  Pics weren’t the best so we’ll see how well it will clean up when it comes in. It was marked IO with the flaming bomb in the slot for the sling. I read up on the stock cleaning best practices on the forum yesterday and found an early inland buttplate with the diagonal checkering on EBay.

Swing and a miss on the $99 I-Cut stock. It’s definitely got a lot of character. Is it worth even messing with in anyone’s opinion?  Can it even be restored?

Here’s the finished product along with a before pic.

http://photobucket.com/share/c0b3283c-0679-4f6b-9cef-0c4e1c222bbc

Total investment was right at $900.

I tried something different with the stock after a test on an old chi-com type56 handguard. I used damp Mr Clean Magic eraser pads and they pulled all the gunk off without any damage to the already worn cartouches. Took a bit of elbow grease but it worked very well without using chemicals or strippers. I hand rubbed it down with three coats of raw linseed oil after a couple days of letting the stock sit.

I took the bubba’d/polished bolt and lightly dragged the top over 220 grit sandpaper in the same direction to mimic the machine markings and take the mirror finish off. I didn’t want the bolt to look brand new, so I applied some vans and quickly oiled it down before it got too dark and it even gave it a worn look on the edges.

Inland sight from eBay was installed by tapping it in with a nylon punch.

I think it turned out pretty good. I appreciate everyone for the help with getting this gun back to its original glory!  If it wasn’t ridiculously cold here in MO I’d have a range report for ya’ll too.

Now I’m hunting for my next carbine project and an early sling and oiler for this one.

Thanks again!!!
