    Posted: Oct 14 2025 at 11:45am
I recently acquired the below type V stock. It has a W in the sling well and 1/2 inch cartouche. It has been sanded and refinished at some point. My question is do you believe this to be an original Winchester type V or has it been faked?

It looks like a birch stock to me and that crossed cannon is much farther forward on the stock than I would expect for a Winchester acceptance stamp. My vote is that it is a fake or at least not an original Winchester M2 stock.

From what I can see W in sling well and cross cannons don't look consistent with real WRA markings to me.

Thank you for the comments. One thing I forgot to show is that the butt has three holes. Did other manufactures besides Winchester use three holes?

Better shots of the sling well and cartouche.

Yes, see Milsurps link below. Have also seen many of the unmarked potbellies with 3 holes.

Winchester used the Type IV stock, the modified Type III for their M2 production.
Both short and long channel.
With and without extra recoil plate support.

The Stamp looks like the early 2005-6~ version of the WRA CC offered by Bardall on Ebay.
The Stock above Doesn't have the Flat forearm profile of the M and Bomb Type V stocks, nor the same router milling in the slingwell. M in this case would have serif bottom inside slingwell.

Mustang2535,
Are the letters SA stamped on the top edge of the barrel channel?

@Wayne,
I think I had that 'Holes in Buttplate' here also?

Thank you.
No SA or any other markings.

for what it's worth the SA can be hard to spot . I didn't think my stock had any markings on it at all until the guys here specifically Charlie, told me where to look for it and if I held it in the right light I could barely see the SA marking. Yours possibly could be the same way as mine. Try holding it and turning it different ways in the light and see if you can see a faint SA
