I just received a carbine that I bought on GB. It was sold as a Saginaw SG but the guy thought it might be an S'G'. I bought it because the serial number was a later first block S'G'. As it turned out, it was half S'G' and half Inland.  Both halves were from early carbines. It was an import that I believe came in through RTI from the marking. I'm not complaining. The photos of the carbine showed a nearly trashed rifle, or so it seemed. I decided to enhance the photos and much to my surprise the right side of the rear sight appeared to have a B-S'G' marking ( the long sight side is also marked B-S'G'. The front sight appeared to be an unmarked Niedner, unmarked except for the #4 on the left side. The barrel band was a type 1, unmarked, but missing the sling swivel.( I just happened to have one in my spare parts pile) The barrel is an 8-43 Buffalo Arms tube. The slide is a type 3 S'G'.
The rest of the carbine is a fairly early Inland, Smooth short faced mag catch, type 2 trigger housing and type 2 dogleg hammer. The bolt is also fairly early Inland marked OI with a sideways 2 and a w-i extractor. All other parts are marked B. I.  except the smooth type 1 safety.
Now here is the question. All of the major parts that are marked S'G' except the front sight, rear sight  and firing pin have been stamped with a small ordnance bomb. All appear to be made by IP on their jigs. I'm wondering why the ordnance bombs. Were these to denote unmarked IP parts that passed testing before the S'G' markings were placed on them? I've never seen so many parts marked that way in a single carbine.

That was my thought too. The stock and hand guard are Inland too. I cleaned up the stock by removing a thick layer of oil and suddenly a fine example of an Inland cartouche appeared. But what puzzles me is the appearance of the letter Q on the left side of the stock. No other letters, just the letter Q. The stock has had some rough handling over the years and has a lot of scratches and dents, but it is still a solid chunk of walnut, not cracks or splits.

CCNL #374 "Irwin-Pedersen Marked Carbines" references I-P carbines with mixed I-P and S'G' parts. Ordinance bomb stamps are mentioned on bolts, firing pins and hammers. No explanation of why the parts were stamped this way. Ordinance bomb stamps also appeared on the right side, of some receivers, right behind the mill cut. Looks like your carbine might have this stamp behind the mill cut.

I guess I should make it clear....The ord. bomb on the barrel isn't the one near the muzzle by the makers mark. The one I'm referring to is stamped on the right side of the gas cylinder.
