Someone 'splain this.
This photo is from Life's website credits it to Carl Mydans, July 1950
https://www.uscarbinecal30.com/Forum/uploads/6307/150609-korean-war-mydans.jpg

Another photo, clearly taken at the same location and time, is watermarked Life
It's posted at The M1 Carbine.  Also stating the photo was taken off the coast of Korea in 1950.
 (

Doing a reverse image source,  Google is now employing Artificial Intelligence.  Ermm
So its no help in finding the photo sources.
Curiously Google is convinced the photo is from Nov 1943 aboard the USS Zeilin.

Uploading issues with the screenshot. Hopefully a moderator can help with.

Matt, Link fixed. When you install a link the box has a drop down for the HTTP HTTPS etc. You must choose the correct one and not copy and past that part of the address WWW, etc only

AI is an oxymoron as there is no intelligence to it. Just because something is on the internet does not make it factual, GIGO if you know what I mean.
Someone else probably quoted the 1943, but I can see a bayonet lug and a flip sight.

I also see an M2 selector switch above the toothbrush in the first picture.

I really have no idea how it came up with 1943 etc.  Oddly it couldn't source the photo correctly at all.

Hopefully you can get the screen shot inserted.  Its a great example of how poorly that software is at historical research.   There was one fellow who just posted on USMilitaria and then CMP using AI to assist his Garand research and it didn't go to well.   Another person posted what what had to be an AI hallucination about how an 18th-century cannon works.   Wacko

It seems that code is being added to the pictures. I would hope from Life it is not malicious, but a code was added just the same.

I agree, I don't believe this is 1943, Korean war photo makes more sense especially since I believe I see a selector lever in the very first photo of the cleaning party but in the second photo the selector is gone. In the first photo I also believe I see a disconnector lever laying next to a slide so I believe there's at least one M2 being cleaned

Thanks. I don't know the M2 parts enough to pick them out.  The late barrel bands and adjustable rear sights are pretty obvious.  I also *think* the uniform shirts are later than '43.  Someone here will know.

Ignoring the other issues with 'AI', its sadly hilarious how poorly google now works with this integrated into the search function.  With duckduckgo it can be turned off, but Duck doesn't have an image reverse search.

To me the riddle with the AI failures must be in either how it works, or how its been tweaked.  Clearly it doesn't 'learn' how to evaluate and discriminate out dead ends or false leads.  Just like a person, if it doesn't "know" the underlying historical systems or procedures it can end up with anachronistic or physically impossible answers and accept them.

Really not so funny, RMC stock stamp on ebay.  At least it is a good thing the seller knows where to stamp the stocks!LOL

Sellers Description:

M1 CARBINE ROCK-OLA CROSSED Cannons RMC Stock Cartouche Marking Stamp Tool.  Here is a ROCK-OLA M1 CARBINE Stock Cartouche marking tool to refresh your sanded stock faded marking to bring it back to the original shape.  I got this about 20 years ago and used it on a couple stocks and it worked great.  This Cartouhe goes about 1/2 inch in the middle of the outside of the stock in front of the Oiler cutout.  Put it back in the gun safe and just found it again, and thought someone else might want to use it. I have never seen another one since. The marking part looks like Brass.  As you can see from the pics it is in perfect shape and real hefty weighting over 5.8 oz.

LOL

You're quicker than me.
Took me a while to figure out what that was!

He looks young but he was in the armed services a couple years and as I recall has earned Distinguished Pistol, Revolver, and maybe a third; topped off with making the President's 100.
