    Posted: Mar 09 2026 at 6:14pm

Over the past year, I developed an interest in Garands, which naturally led me to carbines. I came across a Quality Hardware import on another forum, but it was scooped up before I could make a move on it. After doing a bit more reading and searching, this one popped up. Something about it drew me in, I had to have it.

Since picking it up, I replaced the sling and oiler that came with it (both were repros) and swapped out a Winchester handguard for a Q-RMC that I found here on the forum.

Data sheet Looks correct!
Carbine looks good!
BUT - Is that the serial number?
Here is the serial number of one of my carbines 1404 - - -
Seven (7) digits
Is your Carbine 4 digits? or are the other numbers blocked by you?
Thanks Dave StarStar

Very nice looking carbine!
The stock has been through a rebuild, so not original to the carbine. It also has a post war recoil plate.

The E-379 slide came in a bit later. Other than that your carbine is very close to the COMs 121 and 247.
first is a 1879xxx followed by 1896xxx

Other than the stock (and the original Winchester handguard that you replaced), everything else looks original. One other thing to check to see if this carbine might have been "put together" is the mark on the trigger housing left by the hammer. If your dogleg hammer is original, we would not expect to see a second mark from a later straight hammer. Here's a picture of what I mean.

Well, excuse me! I will return to my slumber now.

Oh, it dawned on my as to if there's another proof P on the barrel other than the UEF one that's shown.

@Harley, I believe I see a M2 selector cutout in the OP's third picture. I believe this might be a Type IV (M2) stock. Here's an edited pic that highlights that cutout. More pictures would be helpful.

I had an early 44 QHMC that had been through RIA at some point. It had their rebuild stamp on the side like OP's but the only thing that had been changed was the sear (type 3 RIA marked). Everything else on the carbine was original including the wood, flip sight and type one band, so it's possible to be sent through rebuild and not have the whole carbine rebuilt. I am not at all saying that's what happened here but mine was a certainly a light rebuild.

John, Is it possible the original stock was sporterized or broken, and a previous owner got a correct stock that been though rebuild and put on?

@Boz, can you check the barrel for a second "P". A pic of the mid section of the top of the barrel would help.
Front sight looks like the stamped and brazed type, any markings? Look at all sides including the front and inside the wings.

Single P on the barrel and looked at the front sight under magnafication and it has no markings.

The QMHC barrel proof is one of the few that is fairly easy to identify. On all other carbine barrels that use a "P" proof, the leg on the "P" is about the same length as the upper encircled portion. Some have serifs, some don't. NPM uses a simple punch mark and WRA uses their stylized "WP" logo. (See CCNL 384-20)

However, the QHMC "P" proof has a noticeably shorter leg than the others. See the sketch below.
