its been thru a rebuild with adj sight is my best speculation--when you look at sanded stock and no wear on mag catch you tend to think been restored some--probably a repro mag catch as it looks new-no wear

You can hardly make out the word "TRIMBLE" above the "TN" in the sling well. This is often the case that "TRIMBLE" is not well struck.

BTW, welcome to the Forum from New Mexico.

At first, I thought the Underwood front sight was out of place on this carbine, but I found that during the latter half of 1943, Underwood transferred a number of sights to NPM (WB! pg. 457), so maybe this sight is okay. I would have expected to see a sight marked "SN" during this timeframe such as found on COM's 293 & 363. Also, does the barrel have the proof punch mark typical of NPM's about 6" from the muzzle? This would be in addition to any proof mark Underwood might have left on this barrel that NPM obtained from the Government-Free-Issue-Barrel program.

Not the "P" proof, but an actual punch mark, looks like an indentation made by a pointed punch.

Did NPM use adjustable rear sights or did they not?
The staking looks pretty good to me. Larsons book says they did.

Larson also shows a welded up M1 receiver front half to a high serial number in the M2 range rear section.
There are many instances of tom foolery in the book as well as fake parts

To add to what Dan said, both COM's I referred to earlier that were in the same serial number range as yours had flip sights, not adjustable sights. I would expect yours to originally have a flip sight marked "RN", "TN" or "N-A". Check out this later NPM in the Carbines of the Collectors forum for comparison.

https://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/my-nicest-postal-meter_topic1524.html

Perhaps the adjustable sight on your NPM was added as a field upgrade.

It might have had the .U. front sight added when the rear Adj sight went on, makes it easier to tune them together.
For shooting, I much prefer the rear Adj sight
