Hi all, new member from Texas. I have an M1 carbine which according to my now deceased father in law was obtained as surplus from a lot of WW2 M1 carbines acquired by the NRA back in the early 60’s. Some research I did seems to confirm this rifle SN is part of that surplus. It has the following markings:
Barrel is marked Inland General Motors 11-42, the receiver is stamped with the Inland logo. The stamped SN on the receiver just behind the rear sight is 117490. The stock has a small crossed canon cartouche. Quite faded and worn but visible. The bottom of the stock has the letters RA F P where the F is slightly raised above a dash. When I disassembled the rifle I saw there’s a social security number engraved on the side of the receiver. That SSN isn’t my father in laws SSN. I took it out and shot it yesterday. It’s very accurate and a resl pleasure to shoot. I can see why folks love this gun. Based on this website. It looks like this is one of the early production inland m1’s?

Hi and welcome to the Carbine Collectors Club Forum from New Mexico!
The barrel is probably original to your carbine which was made sometime around January of 1943. The RA-P (the F may have been added later) on the heel of the grip is a Raritan Arsenal stamp suggesting the carbine has been through a later arsenal rebuild. If so, I suspect it also has an adjustable rear sight, flip safety and a barrel band with a bayonet lug. The SSN was possibly added by a previous owner and is not a result of the rebuild. When you get a chance, please post pictures and send in a Data Sheet. Again, welcome to the Forum. |

Take a look through the Carbine of the Collectors and Newsworthy items for Inlands of similar time frame that people have documented. PS. Glad you enjoyed shooting it. I'm firmly in the camp that believes that shooting is part of owning them. At least most of them.

Thanks for the information. I’ll look into completing a data sheet. It does indeed have the flip sight, flip safety, and barrel band with bayonet lug.

trouble loading pictures, read the pop up message. Most common is an image being to large. If so the image needs to be down sized. Ask if you need help If you are getting a denial to upload, wait a few seconds and try again. The software is generating some false hits. If you still have issues, ask for help. some helpful posts Your stock, there should be markings the sling well. I am going to guess there is a P or P-J or L-J your second picture with the inland logo is the trigger housing, not considered a receive. Welcome to the forum!

Here's a "Carbines of the Collectors" link to a carbine made within a month or two of yours to compare.
https://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/1466xx-inland_topic7533_post64349.html#64349 It includes a good example of a Data Sheet. |

Yes. Similar but also some differences. Mine has the adjustible rear sight. And barrel band with bayonet lug. Which I presume was part of the Raritan armory upgrade/refurbishment.

Yes. Regardless its a good example of how to fill it out and may also serve as an a compare - contrast with yours. Please work on a data sheet and ask for help as you go. The J stock with the stamps yours has is interesting. I'm surprised to see it with an acceptance cartouche but I'm no expert. If you need help with resizing, let us know ewhat program you're using and we'll figure it out, or a moderator will help out.

Hunterman's writeup here is also an excellent guide because he highlights and illustrates characteristics. https://www.uscarbinecal30.com/Forum/featured-carbine-inland-210424_topic3196.html As far as identifying a person who had used it, that's pretty unusual. On the other hand, you say there is an ID number engraved in it, and the carbine came from DCM, so maybe, just maybe, its possible to find out who that number was associated with. If its an SSN - that might be hard but I'm sure there are ways.

Matt, the Jewell Brothers (J) replacement stocks are known to have a small, crossed cannon stamp, sometimes in the sling well next to the J and sometimes on the right side as is the case here. There is a lot of speculation as to why they have a CC not sure we really know for sure. Edited by W5USMC - Feb 06 2026 at 9:58pm |
