I went one time in 2005 or 06, while talking to some tv western stars I was introduced to Joe W the III, son of Joe W Jr.

Heard Joe III died in the early 2024 (?)

Once read that if all tables were sold out you'd have about 20 seconds to view each to see them all.

The show seemed a little less crowded than I recall for past shows. Still, it was big. There was a huge display of Larsen carbines; as someone remarked they all looked brand new. Our table put out 6 carbines and sold 2, along with some parts, mags, and a stock. I enjoyed it - met some old friends and some new ones.

I decided to attend the show at the last minute, for the first time ever, and am glad I did. Met a lot of nice people and it was a very good experience. I walked about seven miles in six hours to cover the show. Saw at least 70 M1 Carbines (including 30 of the Larson carbines) but didn’t buy anything.

@Hunterman – what row was your table at? I wish I knew, it would have been nice to meet you.

Just a comment about the Roger Larson carbines at the Wanenmacher's Gun Show. In his book "Comprehensive Guide M1 Carbine", Larson describes the process of "repairing" carbine receivers by using a TIG welder to fill-in any stake marks on the rear sight dovetail. The process includes refinishing at least a portion of the receiver. The Larson carbines at the show most likely went through this "repair" as they had no visible stake marks on their receivers. The collect-ability of these carbines was likely damaged by this change. Prices listed on the Larson carbines were $3K plus.

That stake repair was also offered in their catalog.

I seen 1 carbine that had this done at a local show.

Appeared nicely done, but looking closely you could tell just the Dovetails had been dunked in the park.

Finish was close, but with good lighting and by looking at multiple angles you could see the fresh sparkly parked area. With some age and wear, with oil on it, I'm not sure you'd know down the road.

Down the road will be the key.

Even knowing the serial numbers of those that have been 'Repaired' wont help if you can't see they've been repaired/reparked.

I think Larson was counting on this.

I think the welded receivers with remilled or ground dovetails if done right will always qualify as just what they are--a refinished original receiver-you look at garands 3/4 or more are refinished-sure not welded but some are plugged and some are drill gun refurbs-they will have a better value redone then the way they looked originally just before going to the "body shop". At end of day is cosmetic surgery. I want to see folks stand up and tell me what they call the cosmetic facelifts or wrinkle removals their wives are doing. Not sure we would get away calling that faked. All that said repro parts being sold as orig is pure thievery.
