Hello from eastern NC (same county where David “carbine” Williams spent his time in prison). I was a member of the CMP and purchased a lot of carbines when they were bringing them back into the USA. I finally found my “grail” carbine and am looking for more info about it.

I was approached by a gun club member who knew I was a carbine enthusiast. He asked if I was interested in a carbine he owned. I never pass up a chance to look at new to me carbine. It “appears to be a used but unissued 5 digit Winchester. I, know from experience, that these can be faked but if it is it is the best I have ever seen. All parts are appropriate for a First production run Winchester M1. The CMP barrel erosion gauge reads zero and the “go” “no go” and field gauge readings were perfect. The only defect is a small dent on the left side of the stock. I call it my grail rifle because I never ever thought I would ever see a First production run Winchester in near perfect condition let alone own one. The guy I bought it from is a retired federal law enforcement officer who claimed he has owned it for over 50 years. I would like to know what it is really worth.

Hello and Welcome Chrisp52,
You've found a group here that will be hoping you've found your grail gun, a true authentic. We'll need detailed pictures to be posted so collectors here can help determine if it's authentic and to judge condition. Location can affect value and I believe we have a few members near your area. A Data Sheet is a great way to document the carbine and also contributes back to the site here. When ready, best to start a new post and include your pictures and Data Sheet. We'll be looking forward to seeing the carbine and Data Sheet. Thx for jumping onboard ![]() Ch-P777 |
